Hello. Sorry to bore you guys with a sizing question. I know most members recommend to size down half a size from Grant-last to Barrie-last. I have boots in the Grant last in US 8.5D which are are fine overall but a bit snug at the end of the day (pinky toe). Sizing down alf a size to Barrie (to US 8D), will I have more room at the toes then with Grant US 8.5 D, or will I loose the extra room of the Barrie-last by sizing down half a size?

Thx!

Without answering your specific question, based on my experience with Grant and Barrie boots as well as how you describe the grant fit, I would not size down in Barrie. With shell, Grant 9D fits me like a glove and Barrie 9D fits well. I couldn't go down 1/2. Maybe for suede but not shell.

Thx!

Mine is 8.5D on Grant and 8D on Barrie. Both are fit very fine to me and just a bit more room at the toe on Grant (8.5d) since it's a bit longer compares to Barrie (8d).

But if you are snug on 8.5D Grant, you may go with 8.5D on Barrie.

Today was an exciting day, as I think I finally nailed down my Barrie last sizing for shoes. After experiencing persistent heel slip in my 8D Barrie lasted shoes (but not boots), and getting some pretty tough heel blisters and soreness, I decided to try to go down a width for my next purchase.

Kathy at Alden DC was extremely helpful and I was able to settle on a beautiful pair of 975s in 8C. They arrived today, and they fit great. My heel is snug and comfortable, and the reduction in width did not affect the instep much - just made the toebox noticeably more snug. However, it's not too snug, especially with normal or light weight dress socks, as I usually wear thicker SmartWool Diamond Jim wool socks with my Barrie lasted shoes to add volume. I can even fit into them with the Diamond Jims.

I was craving color #8 longwings ever since I sold my pair of Florsheim Royal Imperials, and these hit the spot perfectly. Some pictures of what is, without a doubt, Alden's king:

Congrats on finding the right fit! Now good luck getting every shoe in your C width. :-)

Here was a pic from before the neatsfoot oil, the leather had quite a nap and also lots of deep rust tones. Such a great leather, I would love to see a NST boot done in earth reverse chamois, contrast stitching. I think it would be awesome.

Looking good and rain compliant. Good stuff!

On another note:

@mdubs
what is the method that you use to ensure that you actually wear all your shoes in rotation?

Do you use a Spreadsheet?

Please Advise.

Yeah, I track far too much via a spreadsheet. I will take a snippet of it when I get home from breakfast.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's not going to happen. If I can order new Barrie shoes in 8C, I will, but I'll probably just stick with thicker socks and maybe a little heel grip or something for my 8D Barrie shoes. I think it's exacerbated by the extremely stiff double leather soles that Alden uses. My 8D Barrie suede shoes fit better (although they have flex-welt soles and are suede so they're more tightly lasted). Fortunately, the D-width in the TTS lasts like Aberdeen and Plaza is quite good for me in the heel.

I'm with you Ttown. When Alden is on their game, for my money, there's none better.

You know Alden shoes are so hard to find specially non color 8 shell I tried and its either sold out or get on some waiting list. It's crazy how fast they sell out.
