Hey guys, looking for a spot of advice:

I'm looking to buy a pair of LWB's in #8. A local store stocks Alden, but they didn't have the perfect size for me, so they have another two pairs in larger sizes coming in a week.

Ive got two questions:

1) I feel pretty great in an 11D barrie, but I have a little bit of pinky toe pressing thats making me nervous. The back / heel feels amazing though. Should I size up by .5, or maybe look into finding a B/E size?

2) I feel no particular affinity for this store, honestly they're kind of dicks. If I'm willing to pay retail, is there a good place (online / over phone) to order from that might have better service or price? I was quoted 715 for the LWBs. I live in Oregon if that matters.

Thanks!

Are you talking about John Helmers? I've never heard anyone with a bad experience there! If not, who else is an Alden stockist in Oregon now that Winn Perry has closed?

Does anyone know when those rare colors from Alden or custom Aldens shells cordovans are made? Do they have special events where they buy shells of different colors like Ravello? I would like more variety but only see Color 8 and Blacks. Have Color 8s already and prefer black in calfskin but really like cordovans and want them in different colors besides color 8 :(

If you ever want someone to take those off your hands then you know where to find me! An unworn pair of sweet sweet ravello boots could become a burdensome thing and I would hate to see you get stressed out about it. Seriously though, let me know if you guys are getting together in Philly. I would definitely be up for grabbing a drink or two sometime.

All Alden shell cordovan is sourced from Horween Leather in Chicago USA. www.horween.com

Shell cordovan leather is an equine product and is a byproduct of the horse meat industry. As such, there has been a decline in demand for such meat, and therefore decline in production of usable shells. One horse is enough to produce only one pair of shoes or boots, whereas you can usually get 3 to 7 pairs out of a cow.

The lighter shades of shell do not cover blemishes that occur naturally in the leather, so it is harder to find blemish-free specimens to make lighter colors from. They are also not as popular with the rest of the world, and customer demand is lower outside of this forum. Alden commits itself to keeping up their stock of black and color 8 for these reasons. There has also been a sharp increase in customer demand for shell cordovan leather the last half decade so supplies are even lower.

Given the above circumstances, Alden has reduced the colors of shell that it offers compared to several years ago. Colors such as #4, #2, and mahogany are no longer produced by Alden, but they are still made by Horween.

Alden currently produces the following colors of shell shoes and boots:
-Black
-Color 8
-Cigar
-Whiskey
-Ravello
