I realize it's personal preference at the end of the day, but what do LHS owners think about the length of the vamp? Do you find that when wearing with shorts, or slim pants, it shows too much foot/sock?

I just picked up my first pair of LHSs...

The length of the vamp is just right for me. I don't wear any kind of shoes with shorts, so can't help you there. I generally wear straight leg khakis, chinos or jeans, so barely any foot/sock showing. I can see showing too much foot/sock in a business environment a no no, but ok in a casual setting.

BTW, these things are so dang comfortable right out of the box! It doesn't take much to break them in.

Alden does such a great job with balmoral stylings.  Very underrated IMHO.

If their was the opportunity to get the cordovan rainbow in Alden balmorals, I would take the plunge with no questions asked.

Here are my 9015's:

My all-time favorite alden that I have seen in person is a whiskey wingtip bal (not sure what last it's on). It is an amazingly beautiful shoe that blows anything else I've seen in person out of the water (should note that I live nowhere near an Alden store and I only know one guy other than myself that owns any pair of Alden's, so the only pairs of Alden's I've seen IRL are my one pair and his numerous pairs).

Chromexcel is a thicker, much more durable pull-up leather. It is tanned twice, allowing it to retain the oils in the leather, which makes it more water resistant than other leathers. It also tends to scuff fairly easily and develop a "beat up" looking patina, making it an inherently more casual leather as well. Chromexcel stretches more than other leathers, so something to keep in mind when sizing.

Calf is a thinner, more fine leather that is most often used in more formal shoes. It tends to form tiny microcreases. It can be polished and shined up pretty well.

The J Crew Barrie last lined chukka in green suede. My problem is, I can't seem to get one made in 3E width. I've contacted just about every Alden retailer with no luck.

Vass makes a fine chukka, and their olive suede is very nice. I could order an MTO through them, but I prefer the shape and pattern of Alden's, and that crepe sole...

I guess I'm posting rather out of desperation. Does anyone have any info or leads that I may be missing?

Thanks!

Very nice. The flex welt version is fairly readily available. Not sure if you are amicable to that model.

The Whiskey Wingtip Balmoral is one of my favorite Alden models and to me totally captures dressing up in San Diego. :-)

Typically the Whiskey Bals are on the Tremont last.

Thank you for the info.

Thanks Mike, but I prefer the support of lined. I have the AE amok, which I find I can't walk in for longer than 15 minutes without achilles pain. Plus, the flex welt version is on Leydon, which is narrower than Barrie, and only goes to AA, so it won't work for me.

I have used it on shell and I would say that it works well. No negative effect that I found.

Hmm...so The Shoe Mart raised 2nds pricing by $50? Shell was $425 on 7/15.
