Eggplant and Indigo. The 975s are truly king, such a versatile piece of footwear.

I've seen this mentioned in the Vass thread a few times.

Sizing variance, one expects this with boots (larger).

But shoe to shoe or boot to boot this is unacceptable.

How the heck does this happen?

Do their actual Lasts for one size vary in size?

Was the guy who made the Lasts drunk when he made them?

I think it has more to do with the temperature inside the factory and how the leather stretches over the last. Alden does not have Air Conditioning from what I am told and so the factory doesn't maintain a perfectly consistent temperature. Also, the upper is stretched over the Last before being nailed on, that is not a 100% consistent process. Also leather is not exactly the same as it varies on how it stretches and maintains its shape with lasting.

Wow, certainly sounds like something a shoemaker would want to get a handle on if the variance is great enough and it would be in their best interest to try to prevent it from happening. I certainly don't remember hearing about this occurring with any other shoemaker than Vass in regards to where the variance is great enough to be noticed and to be problematic.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Mike.

Cheers,

Dan

I'm in Mid MI; I think the first time I saw it was when I lived in NYC but they are in abundance here! The ice cream from the Dairy Shop here at MSU is still the best I've ever tasted anywhere! Can't beat making ice cream from milk obtained from cows the next block down. Where in MI are you? There are a couple of guys towards the Eastern part of the state like MP.

It was surprisingly good! Not too sweet and very creamy! It will definitely produce distinctive Alden "rolls" if I ate them more often lol8[1].gif
The Whole Foods near me sells this stuff. Makes me smile each time I see it.

They're hand lasted, so there's going to be variance. I doubt there's more than you'd find in Alden though.

Ok, so that makes sense. It would probably be rather difficult for some of these shoemakers that make so many shoes to do it by hand instead of machine. I have to wonder then how many and which still do it by hand.

Thanks,

Dan

I just prefer the look of Alden over Vass. Cost aside Alden is aesthetically more pleasing to me. Some of them look like they need a big pilgrim buckle atop them. To each his own.
