Took delivery of both the Leathersoul suede wingtip and 14 oz. whiskey shell wingtip this week. Pictures were posted earlier in this thread by better photographers than I (and I'll note that someone is selling their LS suede wingtips and it's the best deal on the marketplace! http://www.styleforum.net/t/501773/alden-snuff-wingtip-boots-barrie-last-9-5d/0_100).

The collection continues to round into place...

I'm thinking about jumping in on Leffot's Alden Chromexcel penny loafers on the Van last, but have no experience on it at all. To start, I'm a 10.5 who's more like 10.7 on my right foot in the toebox.

I see the usual consensus is size down by 1/4-1/2 but I did that for a Barrie in a lined suede moc toe, and while the shoe and toe box fit great I still have quite a bit of heel slippage in the rear. I've seen some say that given the penny would be unlined and in the Van, I could size down a whole size - especially since CXL is supposed to stretch and conform more than other leathers.

My other last info:
10UK in Carmina Simpson (upsize +.5, fits great)
10US in Alden Barrie (sized down .5, good fit but heel slippage)
10.5US in Plaza is perfect
9.5UK/ 10.5US in C&J 358 and 325 are all good
10.5US in C&J 348 - had to get the right foot stretched slightly

What say? Any input is appreciated.

I have a similar size to you. Both of my feet are about 10.5D on brannock. I have a slim heel and a slightly wider forefoot. When I went into Alden D.C. earlier this year, Kathy measured me a surprising 9.5D on the Van last penny loafersm because 10D was somewhat loose. I do suggest that you try them on.

Are there any differences between the shell number 8 longwings that jcrew sells and the ones that are available at the more typical alden sellers like Shoe Mart?

I don't believe so.

The J Crew description is however incorrect where it states:

  • Horween Chromexcel shell cordovan leather upper.
  • Reinforced metal eyelets.

left to right: vass f last (45f), Edward green G 202 last (uk11.5E), Alden Plaza (12D), Vass U last (45.5)

of course its all relative, next to the vass u last it looks more casual than dressy

great looking boots namor.

Yes, color 8. I couldn't justify them, as I have the Naval boots, Hallecks on the way, and I just got the DC cigar captoe.

could someone tell me what makes the halleck a halleck? is it just the contrast of the welt/edge to the upper? Or is there details that I'm missing?

unionmade calls its wingtip boots "halleck" - in past iterations they've made hallecks with a dark welt (2013), so the contrast welt isnt a necessary feature, just any alden color8 wingtip boot makeup from unionmade

For me, the important distinction is that they have all eyelets.  Like sleepy said, they have done variations, and I believe they have had double leather on some.  The ones I have pre-oredered have a dark welt and a commando sole.  By comparison, the Epaulet color 8 Brixton is similarly all eyelets, but always with antique/double leather.
