E does a waterlock sole as well. However, there's something different about how it looks. Their version is almost more plastic-like.

Thanks, I just sent Nick V. a PM with the same question. I'd likely have him do the work anyway.

I've seen other mfr's offer a waterloc type sole but haven't read about a cobbler offering a similar aftermarket product. My old Wolverine 1Ks had a similar oiled sole. This also begs the question, how do flexwelt/waterloc equipped models like the 1494 unlined chukkas differ from non-flexwelt models? Does the flexwelt refer to just the waterloc sole or are there other differences?

I believe you're right. I think it is a JR waterlock. I have them on a couple pairs of my boots, so far so good.

No I mean a picture. Like side by side of both of the shoes (from the top down) To see how much wider/etc the Barrie is.

I wear 10D in barrie and 10.5D in the AE 5 last. Hope these pics help you...

and...

The length should be about the same but the barrie is clearly roomier. The heel and arch are certainly wider in the barrie. However, be careful as the storm welt will give the barrie an even wider appearance. Half size down usually works for most. Good luck my friend!

I tend to think that commando sole automatically makes it too casual to be a dress boot. Is that not true?

Individual preference but as an owner of commando style chukka's I am very comfortable dressing mine up. The sole is subtle and not at all chunky.

Probably my favorite pair of Alden boots right now. The speed hooks give them an edge over my cap toes, not to mention how well the Barrie works in non-formal situations.
