I also have a pair of Church's cordovans. Never had the wax-leaching problem.
So I am sticking with calfskin or suede. I still love the product.
Thanks! That leaves a bigger selection for me to choose from. ; )

One more thing: Why doesn't Alden, or any other quality shoemaker, produce a shoe in grey suede?
Alden does tan, brown, snuff, navy and black. Even white, on special makeups. All great. But why no grey?
And why not more captoe, medallion, or wingtip suede boots?

You may want to look into brands like Tricker's or Paul Smith who have more 'fun' color makeups.

Trouble is, I know Barrie fits me perfectly. I haven't the faintest idea what lasts in Paul Smith or Tricker's or Church's or Lobb or any of the others fit me.
I'm not even sure they all have as reliable a last system as Alden.
But thanks for the advice.
Maybe on my next trip to Manhattan.

If you have your Alden size dialed in you can contact Leather Soul for a recomendation on Lobb, Trickers, and EG sizing since they sell all 4 brands.

I'd have to ask, how exactly you care for them? Have you ever used an ill-advised neutral wax or cream on them or subject them to some foreign chemical? The only differences I've noticed from the ones I own are some are shinier than others out of the box and variances in the same color (ie some 8 is darker than others and some Cigar more red or green than others). But I've never had an issue with the leather doing something strange. Just a light coat of wax and some occasional Venetian Cream and mine look great.

$300 for new Alden #8 shell boots

model I have never seen before. they are actually listed as used but the seller says both soles look like the one he took a picture of, and it looks unworn. he said they dont look worn.

there may be some money to be made by flipping them, though they are an odd size (11E)

If you're in Ontario and can travel to Toronto you could just buy that boot at Nomad's. Yes it'll be more expensive than in the U.S. but if you factor in no shipping charges, not having to wait for it to arrive, being able to try it on to ensure a perfect fit and be able to inspect the actual shoes for defects prior to purchase I think it's worth it.

It looks like Nomad's needs a restock though as only size 9.5's are left.

Guy there said restock may be coming in May. Alden is pretty slow, they said.

When I saw that J Gilbert pre-order for some reason I thought they'd be coming in Spring. Called in, not until late August . In good news, I asked about cordovan prices and they said $615 (for the plain toe high boot at least). There's no way I'm patient enough for late August. Anyone know where I can get Color 8 Cordovan boots with cap toe and plaza last? No brogueing or I'd get the Leather Soul Officer Boot. I'd ask about a plain toe version but that's J Gilbert only I guess. Any suggestions welcome since my size isn't readily available everywhere.

my new friends: Cigar PTB. One day of NYC wear.

Hey guys I have a pair of cordovan wingtip boots on the barrie last, size 8D. Same size I wear in my Indys.

When I first got them, they seemed a little snug (not in the length, but in my instep) but after wearing the around the house for a bit they felt fine. After wearing them out, the right boot have me the nastiest blister on my heel. I am not sure if I sized the boots wrong, or if this is just something I am going to have to deal with until they break in. Other than that, the boots feel fine.

Looks nice. Where did you buy those? Is it the barrie?
