(2) Carmina Color #2 captoe bal (very bold color which I'm slightly concerned about wearing to work at my business casual law firm)

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I already have Alden wingtip boots in Color #8 (barrie), so I am leaning towards the Carminas... just slightly concerned about the Simpson fit.

while I do not have these specific boots, I have suffered from the dreaded tongue shift on my indys. I had my local cobbler (since replaced, but not due to this job) stitch the tongue. The matching up of the stitch line could have been neater, maybe shorter, but it get's the job done (and these are my beaters so it's no concern cosmetically)

^id say he did a great job. thats an awkward job to do by hand but almost impossible with machine.

Thanks Mark, they fit great.
Nice meeting you too. We'll talk soon. Trying to get you added to the PM chain but I keep getting an error?

Took some more pics for you gents. Sorry for the quality - I don't have good light here unless it's daytime.

I took these (which used to have a crepe sole) over to a local cobbler here in Chicago (Beehive Shoeworks). I was impressed with the quality of their work on other projects I'd had done, so I decided to take a chance on these with them. They were far cheaper than B.Nelson and had Dainite.

I requested the crepe soles to be completely replaced with a Dainite sole, double leather midsoles, and I asked them not to stitch through the Dainite. They said that was okay, and actually told me that they usually do not stitch all the way through double Dainite, especially when there is a midsole. I also requested that they clean up the welt edges (which were rather worn and faded) and put on a dark brown finish on the edges.

Needless to say, they fulfilled my requests exactly and I was quite pleased. Total cost was $125. The same service at B.Nelson would have been over $200 (I checked).

These are SUPER chunky and have a really commanding presence. I love it.

As you can see, I took pictures of one shoe from the resoled pair next to one shoe from my other pair of Ravello LWBs, which are on a normal double leather sole.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Brilliant.  I never knew about double leather midsoles.  Thanks for sharing the pics.

@benleaman - love those boots.

Question - did you go with your normal Barrie size on these?

I ordered these in my usual Barrie size and they were too tight. I would have needed to go TTS but The Shoe Mart was out of my size.

So, here is my 2 cents.

You are in the Alden thread, and will likely get a biased response here.

However, having owned both pairs you mention, the LWBs will be easily much more versatile.

That being said, the ruby shell is beautiful. Beware of the Simpson last, as it is quite narrow.

In a casual but conservative environment, the LWB wins hands down.

I would add:

(1) While some do have trouble with Simpson, I just go with my Barrie size (i.e., 9.5D Barrie = 9.5 UK Simpson) and it works great for me.

(2) I have those same Carminas and acquired them in part because I didn't know if I would ever see ruby shell again, whereas the 975 will presumably be in plentiful supply until the end of time (or the end of shell at least), and may even be relatively easy to come by gently used.

(3) I don't own 975s.  But, I do have the AE MacNeil LWB in burgundy shell, and I have the Alden LWB in cigar shell.  For me, the Alden has a slight advantage in comfort, but the AE beats it in styling.  So, if you haven't checked out the MacNeil, you might do that too.

How come you unloaded the Florsheims?

Anyhow, this is yet another example of how Alden clunkyness is all relative.

Dang, those are chunky, would love to post a pic next to my 11Bs someday. Haha.

You suck bud. Killer boots. To be honest, my Ravello NSTs have bit into my need to have these quite a bit, but you know me...

My other Ravello LWB is on double leather with an antique welt and edge, so they complement each other well.

Keep the 975 and sell the AE.

They look great.

My understanding was that double Dainite means a Dainite sole with a single leather midsole between the welt and the Dainite sole.

Dainite, or single Dainite, would be attaching the Dainite sole directly to the welt (with no midsole).

So yours is double (is "triple" more accurate?) Dainite but with a double leather midsole?

I look forward to the pair I have a deposit on!

Also I think Madison has also done #8 Grant WT boots?

Edited to add: Grant last is my absolute favorite last from Alden.

Hmm, I'm on Yenni's pre-order list for the #8 Plaza last wingtip boots and was really looking forward to them. Not sure how I feel about the change to the Grant last.

I do however have the problem you're describing with another pair of Alden boots. I have not tried doing anything to fix it. I just let the tongue shift and don't worry about it. They are just shoes after all.

This is common with Alden boot tongues. But I've also noticed it in other brands as well. It can be annoying at times, but I let it slide.

Yes, exactly--this is what prompted my question.  I have really been pining for a Plaza wingtip for a while, as it is on another end of the shape spectrum.  I have the daytripper and am on the list for the DC cigar captoe.  Also, with the Naval boot in hand and the Halleck on the way, the WT on Grant, nice as it sounds, might not be different enough to earn its own space in my rotation....I think.  I still have to consider it some more.
