Dress belts tend to feel less substantial.

I ended up returning the epaulet belt and settling on a classic belt in Chicago tan CXL from Tanner Goods. Should straddle the line between dress and casual quite nicely.

I've had one of their natural CXL belts for years now and I absolutely love it. Plus they're based out of my hometown smile.gif

Perhaps this will serve as an indictment of purchasing Alden from J Crew (Leffot would *never* send these shoes to anyone); perhaps it will demonstrate how good J Crew's customer service is... My thinking: if I saw these on eBay for $550 I'd buy them as is, so J. Crew should bring them down to $550 for me... Fingers crossed!

I'd definitely go for a new pair if they were available, but it isn't clear if/when they'd become available... That's why I'm tempted to keep these (otherwise I'd just be pissy about having to get to the PO for a new pair). :-)

Not to rub it in, but I picked these up today on eBay for even cheaper

Maybe this will help.  Here's info from when I purchased my pair from Jcrew.  Supposedly an unauthorized sale where they honored the price:

Standard (3-6 Business Days) 20853 Alden® cap toe cordovan boots / 13 MEDIUM / DARK BURGUNDY  Shipped 1 $500.25 $500.25

And another recent purchase of the Cadet cordovan.  My point being is Jcrew is feeding you a line of B.S.

Jcrew is one of the better alden retailers (with actual customer service...).

Yes those creases are bad and a return is in order. Yes, we all love a sale. But trying to squeeze them for all they're worth doesn't seem particularly nice, given the just about every other alden retailer has pretty draconian policies (such as about deposits/tryons etc)

Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for your incredible feedback and advice.

The long story: I spoke with one super frustrating manager (Michael C--a personal stylist manager guy) and he basically refused to mark it down at all. I got his supervisor's information and will be in touch with her to describe Michael's frustrating incompetence. He kept insisting they were not clearly creased based on comparing the pictures I sent him to the images at the J. Crew website. Bananas. Just bananas. Anyway, thankfully I called back and spoke with another manager and shared with them this conversation and he immediately knocked off $200. For $500 and change I think these are keepers!

Seriously, I'm very thankful to each of you for your very valuable feedback. Thanks so much. And, please, @totalair1 , keep us in the loop when you find those amazing sales!!!! :-)

Hope each of you has a marvelous night and great weekend in store!
