@ironclad @sazon Thanks! Wore them out last night and really couldn't believe just how comfortable the commando sole was as its my first with it. Gonna be a really versatile boot I think.

I would normally return and order another pair but they're sold out in my size (9D). I assume that this is a defect and that they should not have allowed the shoes to go out. Am I right? Is there any way to address the problems with the boot? Will Alden do it free if I send the boots to them? Or should I simply ask for a refund and hope I can get another pair for this price later down the road?

Edit: I was looking at those pictures on my phone and realized that my response was incorrect. I'm not actually sure what is going on with those boots. Sorry!

I really like the look of the color 8 PCT boot, though. Does anyone else stock something similar? I was apparently seconds too late for the last Leffot naval boot pre-order. =(

I was indeed considering the plain toe versions (4060 on Grant or maybe the 4070H on Barrie), but I would really prefer the perforated cap toe, if possible.

I am a 12 on the brannock, and an 11.5D Barrie last is usually pretty good (with the exception of the J.Crew model which I've read other people wear TTS).

I'm weary of trying a 12D J.Crew boot because the 11.5D almost comes all the way together when lacing with my skinny ankles.

Advice?

In other news, a very nice pair of 11.5D J. Crew color 8 PCT boots are about to go on the market..

Interesting.  I have heard this phenomenon from others as well.  I own PCT boot and find it to be very "Barrie-esque".

I had a #8 WT boot on commando that was a 9.5E and the PCT boot is a 10D.  The PCT boot fit better.

I am now a Barrie 10E.

The thing I have found is that shoes built on the same last in the same size will fit differently.  It goes back to the lasting process at the factory I'm sure.

I'm guessing the different welt style might come into play as well.

I thought I was gonna die breaking in those WT commando boots.

The PCT boot fit almost perfectly from day one.

I still wear them and all other Barrie shoes are 10E.  The PCT is tighter across the vamp.

I feel that the PCT from Jcrew is perhaps one of the finest Alden #8 boots available.

Went to the TSM for the first time...that place is awesome. I picked up a pair of color 8 longwings.

This is my first pair Aldens. I now fully understand what the fuss is all about.

That specific Alden x J.Crew shell boot tends to run smaller than a traditional Barrie by all accounts, and that seems to be the case for me as well. I have those shell boots in 8.5 and they fit me quite well, while I've tried a Barrie 8.5D in other shoes and they're definitely big on me. Maybe a 12 in those boots would fit you? If you are looking for something similar, Shoemart has a very similar boot in the Grant last.

As requested, I have posted my shoe care methodology on AldenOfSanDiego.

http://aldenofsandiego.com/caring-for-your-shell-cordovan/

I did try and take videos, but forgot to bring my Tripod and tried to use my iPhone. Holding a phone, boot, and brushing at the same time equates to a rather shakey video. As I don't want to make everyone nauseous, I decided to not post. However, I took pictures of every single step.

Enjoy!
