On this pair, I noticed the stitching sorta "running off the edge" and generally looking a little sloppy near the heel as pictured below. Is this normal for a re-sole on a 3/4 welt?

I didn't think too much of it at the time of the repair, figuring that it was only a small cosmetic issue and that nobody would notice but me. Unfortunately, on the right shoe, the stitching has come undone and the sole/heel have started to separate from the upper:

Note the nails visible in the gap:

Would you all consider this normal wear-and-tear, or would you consider the original work to be deficient? I'm trying to decide whether or not to have the original cobbler re-do the sole, or take it to someone new.

Thanks a lot.

God, yes... Everything about that job looks botched. You deserve some reparations.

Honestly, any of the wings. You have a suede and shell in both light and darker brown. I feel like you wouldn't be missing anything if you let them go. Also, when posting from mobile format you can adjust the size your picture's thumbnail appears.

When you insert the picture the it will appear as this "width/400/height/800" you can increase the dimensions. I typically double them. So you would change it to "width/800/height/1600"

Thanks - I used to post 400/800 with my old phone... I switched to 800/1600, which fixed it

Yeah, my RL Marlows have served me well over the past few years, but I don't wear them that often anymore - they don't really go with my suits and I reach for other shoes (like the cigar long wings) when going casual. Trying to rationalize the "casual blucher" lineup as we head into spring.

I own cigar LWB and Marlow SWB and I would keep both and dump the suede.

That Marlow is such an iconic SF shoe.

When I think of what is perhaps the greatest contribution SF has made to my wardrobe, I think Alden and Marlows....biggrin.gif

Id likely dump the cordovan SW as well. But in full disclosure I wear suede more than shell :gasp:

Leathersoul Vanguard boots. Rainy afternoon in the Texas hill country. Little known fact: Texas hill country is the second most popular region behind Napa Valley for wine production in the US.

Alden put arcylic finisher on both shell and Alpine grain calf to give that instant and durable glossy finish.

BTW, a handfull of Alden shell shoes don't have that glossy finish. Examples: #2 lwb, Leffot Cigar shell saddles. Shell belts sold by Alden don't have that Arcylic finisher either.

I have shell, direct from Horween - the finish on my shell is the the same as the Alden finish.

I have multiple wallets from Ashland. Then natural shell has the same finish as my shoes.

You can track down picture of this in my post history, I don't have time right now to repost it all.

Cheers,
BN

That was a great post....I will say I have a wallet from Ashland as well and even with light use it displays more scuffs and dulls quicker than my alden shell boots. I have used the Angelus acrylic and that seems to replicate the Alden sheen...I did not pigment it though. I may have to try that soon.

I think after working the shell hide over...between stretching, lasting, cutting etc...some finish has to be applied to restore the luster.

It's a shop with a generally good reputation on this forum. I'll give them the chance to make it right, and will follow-up as appropriate after that.

Wife and I went out to meet some friends for dinner this evening.  Wore the King LWB's for the occasion.

Love how different they look in different light.  The shell is really starting to turn into a nice eggplant colour I was hoping for.

Looking good my friend! Enjoy your 975s! They have a terrific color!

We had a late St. Patrick's party to go to tonight, so I went Black Bit Loafers with my Graphite Gustin Chinos and JCrew Sweater and Socks.
