A good friend of mine would put a "yes" in the check boxes for both questions. In addition, he has a 4 year old daughter. One night of dancing to Frozen with her in the living room and he now has something else, a ruined floor.
Metal toes aren't bad, in fact I find them to be pretty damn cool, but I think you need to be conscious of the soles afterwards.
Just my friendly anecdotal advice.

Dancing certainly won't be an issue for me but we do have a couple of rooms with exposed wood floors so that is something to consider. Appreciate the input BenLeaman. Thanks.

Honestly I don't think you have to worry too much about the metal tips on your shoes messing up your wood floors. I think rocks getting caught in commando sole lugs is a bigger worry.

what laces do you guys put on your 403s? The stock cotton ones on mine are starting to split.

For reference, I tried on a pair of the TSM 4060 4 months ago when I swung by the shop. I only recently could budget the 4060 and I got them from Madison. They are identical boots. So while this is not an apples to apples comparison, the only difference is the color of dye. I could not see any reason that the black should be any different.

Someone with far more Alden knowledge may chime in and tell us otherwise but I'd venture to say they are the same boot.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention, buy them! You will not be disappointed.

Some makups have speedhooks and some have all eyelets. If you see HC after the model number, that's commando sole.

I have the 406X in #8 and Cigar, both commando with speedhooks. I want black shell but can't decide between the available double-leather sole + all eyelets or the commando + speedhooks (if that one is still available somewhere).

Edit: H is speedhooks, C is commando. Thank bkotsko

I really like the standard flat waxed laces and have used those when I first got my 403s.

Office lighting you are hard pressed to tell the color difference, in natural light it shows but will even out soon enough.

Honestly, those shoes look like 95% of the Aldens I've ever seen - display model or not. Complete uniformity isn't something that Alden can regularly deliver in their shell offerings. You'd need to move way up the price ladder to have 100% matching shell shoes. Keeping them was the right call IMO.

Agree. I've had cigar and ravello with more pronounced color differences. Great looking shoes. Enjoy often and in good health.

Thanks guys, the finish of the shell on this pair is far superior to any other pairs so I did not want to let them go. They are as smooth as glass.

Here is an outtake pic from yesterday showing the color difference a bit more. The darker pair is in my window at home now and will be there until I feel they are a bit closer in color, hopefully it will not take long so I can check back in showing off the better match.
