I agree, they seem to be a bit more available now. Heck, even TSM has my size in Whiskey and Cigar, but wanted to get them through DC. I'll give it till tomorrow too. I'd like to hear the outcome of the Ravello CTB first.

Are they really handmade though?

@Alpina

I was told that and then when I called the company itself, they said they are "benchgrade"(like C&J's?) They are machine made with hand-finished details. I was under the impression that they were 100% handmade when I first heard the sales rep tell me because I know nothing about shoes. Then I called the company and found out much of it is machine made.

Bump

So what's your question?  It seems like you got the answer from the source--yes, they use machines.  When I said handmade, that was to qualify the level of craft that goes into making the shoe, not necessarily the tools used to do it.  QC still applies.  One can do a shitty job with a machine.

^^^When I toured the AE factory, it was surprising to see the amount of actual handwork that goes into them.  I suspect that the superior quality of Alden requires a little more that AE.

The Alt Wien is nice but I prefer the shape of the aberdeen last on this one.  The 2145 can serve in a much more dressy manner but still has some versatility with a casual look; they work quite well with suits and chinos.  I've worn them with denim before, but not often.

Thanks for the photos and comments. Those look amazing! Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

Honestly my life/career are so casual that the Ep version is probably appropriate even for interviews. I'm a little worried that the last and sole of the 2145 would make them too formal for daily wear. Of course the Ep version is faaaar less accessible so the 2145 is a more realistic option.

I know what many will say here, but I thought I would ask anyways...

Would it be pointless to own both a color 8 wingtip boot on barrie with double leather

and

a color 8 wingtip boot on plaza with commando??

I know, it depends on your wardrobe, weather, setting, etc...  but still, without knowing all of that, can you make an honest answer??

How many/What are the different grades/levels?

I personally would not own both. I would pick my favorite and just own one.

Personally I think there is enough of a difference with the Plaza to warrant having both.

depends on the welt color. one light and one dark would be fine as they are very different.

But if you visit the bricks and mortar, there are some rare shell finds.  Last week I visited Citishoes in NYC and they had a cigar shell cap toe balmoral in many sizes.  Alden Madison had a whiskey loafer (albeit in a 12D or something like that).

Of course you can bid on them 4 figure ebay listings!!

Thanks for the PSA, I picked up a pair of the Cigar cap toe balmoral.. I agree it's nuts these are still available..
