I'll get them one way or another, LOL! If Mike can't get them, then I'll order from Alden DC or SF. I'd like to see them in the flesh. I've never had a penny loafer before and also need to nail down sizing on the Van last. The CXL loafer will make a great all-around business casual/casual shoe that I should get tons of use out of. I know Mike stocks the same model in snuff suede, so I could try it on for size.

Some one else can chime in here with more experience.  I've never tried the chrmxl LHS, but I suspect it will feel and eventually break-in with much a looser fit.  The unlined snuff will probably feel more snug.

Agreed on CXL vs. snuff suede.

Here is a question for you and the group. On aldenshoe.com, material is aniline pull-up leather.

http://www.aldenshoe.com/DrawProducts.aspx?Action=GetDetails&CategoryID=5&ProductID=122&PageID=8

Same model number on Alden SF website, material is CXL.

http://www.aldenshop.com/Store/DrawProducts.aspx?CategoryID=182&ParentID=4&PageID=&Action=

The shoes look identical and have the same model number. From my limited knowledge, isn't aniline pull-up leather different than CXL? Or is it the same?

I got a pair from Leather Soul a couple of years ago and love them.....Barrie size for me.

This has been my experience as well.....I went with Barrie size on the CXL and TTS on the unlined suede.

Detroit in that size fits ok, not as good as Barrie. IMHO.

One thing about Detroit though, for a bigger last, it is aesthetically pleasing, like, elegantly clunky if that makes sense.

Hope this helps!

This is so true. I have the cognac longwings and always think that if my 975's were on the same last they would absolutely be my most worn shoes.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

It is from the marking pen/pencil for laying out the location of the pieces as they are stitched together.

I agree, suggest you try leather conditioner like Bick 4 or similar and brush.  It should come off.  If not a little cordovan #8 polish and then brush.

BK nailed it. They draw the patterns on the leather with a silver pen that is supposed to come off easy. :-)
