I am in the same dilemma . I want a suede boot, however I seem to like more the ct because I already have brass eyelets and have a snuff chukka. The down part is that I have already have a ct boot. Decisions...

I recently brought up the topic of the commando sole wearing through the threads holding it in place really fast. In the photo you can easily see the threads are worn off but the sole has little wear. These boots are less than a year old and worn less than 12 times. Another SF member said he believes the issue is the lugs are too from the edge on larger size boots. Mine are size 13E. I only have this issue on the commando sole. I'm thinking the lugs are pretty from from the edge which allows the edge to wear instead of the lugs. At this point I think the issue is size related. Based on my gait, I do wear the outside edge of my heels out first, which typically is an easy fix with just the rubber portion of the heel getting replaced. I've got dozen of Alden's and other brands of shoe and boots without any issues. Just commando.

In my opinion the fact that the threads holding the commando sole in place are not recessed is causing extremely premature failure am I missing something? All my other leather sole Alden's have recessed threads in the soles.

See Ya,
Steve

Guys?

Wouldn't be SF if someone doesn't suggest keeping them both!

My vote is for the captoes on mystery last.

May I know who is Joe and Joseph?

Joe is the other full time employee on staff at Alden DC. Very nice and knowledgeable about shoes and shoe making, but doesn't track their special makeups closely.

Joseph was a college student who worked part time at the store. He quit several months back because he is going to Med School.

It depends on the person, if they have 1000's of posts and are an active member of the forum, I just feel like I dont have to worry.

Most everyone here takes care of their shoes/clothing with a great deal of care.

Yeah, if it was RTP, half or Mike, no prob.  But I think the OP said the seller was kinda new.

I'm right there with you on this. I have had my Natty Indy's for a touch over a year with decent wear and the threads and soles are separating in the same fashion. I do wear them as boots. I do not baby them, but that goes for other boots with lugged soles. I think its just the quality of the rubber and the stitching not being recessed.  They are definitely in need of a resole, but i haven't made any moves on that. As you can see from the pics my tread is still in great shape. Definitely premature and frustrating.

I've always been a bit skeptical of the Alden commando soles for hard usage. The lugs are just too thin to last a long time which is in stark contrast to the British commando soles which are straight beastly. I walk over 2 miles a day on average and I prefer my Aldens with double leather and a topy for grip/protection.
