Hey fellas,

Thought I'd as the Alden aficionados:

Guys, is the Captoe on Alden's Balmorals(Hampton last) longer than those on AE's #5 Last?

Basically trying to figure out if Alden's Captoe is longer than that on the Park Avenue/5th Ave

Is there a place to buy BNIB Aldens(and specifically the calfskin Balmorals) for <$500?

I thought so too, but definitely not.  The second set of pics show the obvious difference.J Crew Tobacco waxed, barrie lasted LWB...

J Crew Tan Suede, ??-lasted Shortwing Blucher...

Based on this diagram, I think it most resembles the Leydon last.  AoC does have a shortwing blucher on Leydon, but it is color 8 and on commando soles.

If you are asking about the actual length of the shoe, they should be about the same.  If you are asking about the actual cap portion on the shoe, I believe the AE cap is smaller.  The Alden cap seems to be better proportioned than the AE.

Tough to find them under $500 unless you get them off the Bay.  There are frequently BNIB calf versions of the Hampton lasted oxfords listed on ebay.

Sir - j crew sales almost never apply to Alden's. In fact I'm pretty sure Alden actively discourages companies from putting their shoes on sale. Every once in a while though j crew lets some Alden's slip through with sale codes. Usually you will hear about it in this thread - how i purchased my color 8 gunboats on sale from j crew. Sometimes a sales rep will also allow a discount code to be applied - usually not though.

Over the last few years I have taken up leatherwork as a hobby. I do everything without the help of machines (all hand cut and hand sewn etc).

I felt that I was getting to the point I where I wanted to invest in better quality leathers so I sprung for one of these...

Full #8 Horween Shell Cordovan butt.

This is the 2nd largest of the 5 available sizes that shell comes in.

A wallet, watch strap, possible patch for a new pair of raw denim are all things id like to create with this and if i have much left over i'll make some watch straps to sell.

However there will be weeks of patterns and prototypes before a knife comes anywhere near this shell, as I have even considered not using it and framing it to hang on the wall shog[1].gif .

Like you I recently picked one up too - and considering these are rare like hens teeth, we likely go them from the same place. Mine is natural though...

In any case, one thing I commented on with a member here off line was that we one this thread often talk about "the alden finish" or "dry shell" - but what your shell, and mine show is that the finish, directly from Horween is essentially the same finish on our shoes....

Good stuff indeed....

Discouraged is an understatement.

Nope, unfortunately - my plan was to get two natural shells in an attempt to get my Grail boots made... I ordered two, initially paid for two, then one went MIA...

So I took the only one, and will play the waiting game for a second

good man! I didn't think I had a dog in the fight until that pick - my heart told me my team just lost. Solidarity in the Pacific Northwest. Happy for Brady though. And the rookie who made the play. Good luck with the saddles!

Congrats on the saddles. Can't wait to see the pics when they arrived. They are one of my favorites. Sorry about the game, but stoked you got the Frans Saddles.
