I think the 405's are amazing.. as of now they are my only brown CXL boot and can not really see that changing...I do not own the 403's so can not compare.

I try to wipe them down after use and brush. Once every couple of months: Saphir Reno, brush, wipe with old t-shirt rag. Laces are just brown hiking boot laces. I've been too lazy to search for a replacement or ask Alden to send me some.

Can anyone tell me what the difference between a "Innsbruck" CXL and a "normal" CXL is? Thanks!

No difference.  Innsbruck is the name of certain makeups Epaulet does.  They use that name for certain types of Indy boot models they offer.  The CXL is by made by Horween in Chicago.  Same thing across the board.

The 405 is not chromexcel.  The 403 is dark brown chrmxl.  If you can get a significant discount on them, I would snag the 403.

Buda is right in that the leather is exactly the same. The difference is in the details. The Epaulet version has brass hardware and a commando sole.

I think the "Innsbrook" is usually a brown chrmxl make-up that has the brass eyelets and commando soles.  I have the LWB Innsbrook...

It really is an outstanding boot and a classic.  (The 405 and the 403)

One of my favorite Alden makeups.

Oh, right.  Great makeup.  Forgot about those.  Well, it used to just be Indys before the Innsbrookification process spread.  Which is a good thing.

1) On the shell vs CXL indy question... Today in NYC was a rainy and messy day. My LS Ultimate Indy (CXL) was perfect for my activity all day (chores, football watching with friends, etc). Good looking boot, durable in wet weather, commando sole. I'm really glad I have it (I've owned a CXL few Indy boots in the past and this is the best). I will probably wear my cigar Indy tomorrow as it will be drier. IMO if you are an Alden fan, you really need a CXL boot on commando soles.

2) On Viberg vs Alden - Viberg's service boots are great and well constructed. Are they worth $200 more then Aldens? Depends on your style really. My issue with the Vibergs I owned was the dainite sole - I busted my ass twice while wearing my Viberg boots due to slippy surfaces. They are pretty dangerous for city walking IMO. Alden commando soles are significantly better for that purpose.

Recently, Alden on Madison stocked the 403 on commando.  You are right on the money Alci...  If I had to do it over again, I'd go with 403 on commando or the Innsbrook Indy.  My LWB version will have to do for now.
