That said, the Vibergs are at another level of build quality, which reflects the price difference. I suspect you'll still want a pair of Vibergs even if you purchase those Aldens.

I always wondered why Viberg boots were at a higher price point than Alden boots given you are getting less on paper (Viberg chromexcel boots at Alden shell cordovan boot prices). I've never handled or tried on a pair of Vibergs in real life - is the finish and construction really commensurate with the pricing premium in your opinion? It seems the materials used are more or less the same as Alden (Horween).

I've got the Brown CXL PCTs and love them. I was a little reluctant with the natural welt, but now wear them all the time and even rock them at work on Fridays with chinos. Can't speak to the Vibergs.

While I am no Viberg expert I do own a pair and have had a few others pass through my door...I would say Viberg is a step up from Alden, the CXL I have found to be thicker and the construction over all more solid...that being said it is probably over kill for 99% of those wearing them as fashion statements.

If I was doing any manly work at all that required boots there is 100% no doubt I would choose Viberg over Alden.

Viberg also offers some more unique leather choices...I have a Viberg latigo leather PT boot and the leather is beautiful. I have two Vibergs on pre-order a black CXL and a natty xcl...for me it is the look I like.

I have been debating the same thing for some time, I came to the conclusion that the 403 is a classic and needs to stay in the collection. The real answer is to get both haha, a cigar indy in now on my wish list. I also need a cigar PTB at some point as I am always amazed at the pics of them.

I didn't want to volley back back forth with folks since we're all Alden fans, but pretty much all of this.  Whether the increased quality is worth the premium and if it's even necessary on a fashion boot are all definitely YMMV.

My larger point to the OP is that if he spent a year lusting after Viberg, an Alden option will likely end up feeling like a compromise.  Just the way it goes with fashion and not an indictment of our beloved Alden.  The heart wants what it wants or whatever cliche Top 40 lyric is popular these days.

Don't state opinion as fact

I own more than a few pairs from each maker and would argue almost the exact opposite of you on every silly point you make

I think they look just as good while being $150 less and having speedhooks.

Sweet! Does anyone know which last the Aldens are on?

??? nothing there suggests he's stating nothing more than his opinion

My opinion: Alden and Viberg use the same leathers; both use gemming; both are machine-made; both are made (North) America; both have had very minute QC issues. Stylistically, they cater to different tastes. "Quality" (whatever that word means anymore) differences are insignificant.

I was lusting after the Vibergs because I love lighter-hued Chromexcel, the captoe and always wished Alden had a Dainite sole option. After getting some suede Loake chukkas with Dainite and some commando-soled Indys at the same time, I learned that I really prefer the latter. My desire for the Vibergs diminished at that point, but these Aldens hit all the check-boxes.

I think they're on the barrie considering they are slightly more snug than my Innsbruck Indys in the same size and width.
