Care tips for the Vintage Indys? Should I be treating the nubuck differently than polished leather?

From all the reading I have done in this thread, I was expecting to buy a pair of Alden longwings (Barrie) in the same size as my Brannock device measurement or half size smaller. I ended up going half size up though. Brannock size is 11.5C and I went with 12D. The 11.5D was pushing down on my big toe a bit and it didn't feel as comfortable as the 12D. I'm guessing with time it woud have loosened up, but didn't want to take the chance. My measurements were done at the DC Alden store, so I think they are correct.

I also tried a 12D in a Ledyon last and it felt like my toe was hitting the front of the shoe (almost).

I'm curious though why my measurement was so different than everyone elses. Most folks here seem to go down half a size and I went up.

That is unusual, esp. the need to go up in both length and width on the barrie, which is a very full fitting last.

I feel your pain as I am getting really tired with what Harry's and Holt's are offering in their shoe line up however there are no Alden dealers in Toronto, wish there were. The only dealer in Eastern Canada is in lovely downtown Listowel: Norman Knapp 165 Wallace Ave Listowel Ontario, Canada N4W 1K8 and the other Canadian Alden dealers are from the Alden website: Eddie's Men's Wear Ltd 5450 Calgary Trail Edmonton, Canada T6H 4J8 \t Shoes by O'Connors 1415 1st Street SW Calgary Alberta, Canada T2R 0V9 Roden Gray 231 Cambie St Vancouver BC, Canada V6B 5A4

I think the 11.5d would have worked ok, but I just didn't like the way there was some pressure on my big toes.

Demonito- nice collections...Your ultimates have a real nice aged yet still shiny look to them...nice patina.

Are those #8 Cordo Indys? They look brand new...have you worn them?

The Barrie toebox isn't unusually large. You might have been better off going wider but sticking with the usual down 1/2 size in length. I have wide feet, so I size down in length and out in width on the Barrie (ie from 9.5 E to 9 EEE).

Okay, I think it all makes sense now. I was so curious about why the shoes seem to fit just fine and my sizing is way off from everyone else. Well, I went to the Brannock site (brannock.com) and used the directions for measuring heal-to-toe. I measured my foot at 11.5" without socks and pushing down on the big toe. I used two square wood blocks at each end of my foot along a straight line (to get a nice square at each end). Anyway, then I used the conversion chart on the brannock site and wouldn't you know it 11.5" comes out to be a 12.5 US Size and I bought a 12.

I measured my foot twice to make sure and I'm pretty sure this explains the 'mystery' now. I'm surprised DC Alden measured my foot at an 11.5 (hole size off). Then again, I wasn't standing and he didn't squeeze the toe down on the device. edit: measured a few more times and it's always between 11 1/4 " up to 11 3/16" (with a couple of 11.5"). So, basically my brannock size is somewhere around a 12 and that's what I bought my longwing barrie lasted shoes in.
