I had an espresso from some machine at Sur La Table at the SF Ferry Building. I am told that the brand is the favored machine of a well-known Style Forum bon vivant and snob. Unfortunately, I forgot it's name.

The espresso was great, BTW.

I've read rave reviews of the Rancho Silvia espresso maker. Around $500 but bullet proof with high resale value (as parts are easy to come by). I guess that might be the Honda?

I have a Gaggia Tebe, about 6 years old now and going strong. However, some small part of me wants it to die so I can buy a manual-lever Italian chrome machine like the one a friend of mine owns. I think he has this one:

Mokas make good coffee, but they don't make espresso.

Pavonis are the Bentleys of espresso.

I have a Nespresso as well

actually two, one professional model and the Alessi designed one - I mostly use the Pro one as it is fully automatic. I'm using the Bialetti at the moment - it's a reminder of the place that I bought it from, a small hardware shop in the back lanes of Venezia and the coffee is nice and smooth.

Everyone in Italy uses Bialettis at home (although usually not actual bialettis, but mokas anyway). If they want espresso, they go to the bar.

I'm not a great espresso drinker - I use my machines mostly for cappucino or latte, but I had a few espressos in Italy. The coffee at Sant Eustachio was amazing.

Best coffee in the world. A source of mine just dropped off a 1-kilo bag of the beans.
