This is just such a great song. For the longest time, I thought the Dead did the best version. But I saw The Levon Helm Band do it this summer (with Levon on mandolin! ) and it really killed. Here's Levon and his band doing the song at this August's moe.down festival. Professional quality video

Who was the original author of Deep Ellum Blues? There are many, many more verses to that song than the ones that the Dead chose to play.
