Pre-dinner cocktail - Page 2

This is a good question. I like manhattans as well as dirty martinis.

Generally wine, champagne or Lillet Blanc. But if in a cocktail mood, before dinner, I like a gin martini up with a few olives, mojito (we grow fresh mint and limes outside the kitchen door) or a margarita (fresh lime, Cointreau, tequila blanca shaken and served up).

I like bourbon, but prefer it after dinner neat or on the rocks for sipping.

Classic.

Manhattan or a Rob Roy (with Jamieson's) would probably be my choice but so often they are botched that I rarely bother. The Negroni, New Pal and the Americano (most of which have been mentioned already) are also great in that role. In the depths of winter an Old Fashioned is just right. At other times I enjoy what I call the Embrasseur du Lillet -- 2:1 sparkling wine (dry, dry, dry) to Lillet Rouge with a twist of orange, or in summer to my White Manhattan (2:1 exceptional gin to Lillet Blanc, dash of Marashino, fat wedge of lemon).

Martini with a twist and very light on the vermouth is clean on the palette

Vodka martini straight up with a twist, or a whiskey sour (which is almost never made properly in most bars or restaurants- but I keep ordering them anyway!)

I like to order a strawberry daiquiri in order to signal to my date that I'm not all machismo, but am also in touch with a sensitive feminine side.

Gin and tonic 90% of the time.

Occasionally a caesar when I'm at a steakhouse

My favorites are sours of some sort (generally a whiskey sour, but I also like caipirinhas, not sure if those are really sours or not), especially if it is a real sour, and not from a crappy sour mix. Even if I'm not having alcohol, some lemonade before dinner seems good.

Otherwise, like many others, I enjoy a Manhattan.

Bourbon, neat in an Old Fashioned glass. It took me so long to firgure out that simplicity is the true path!
