Alright im 18 and go to a big university. A little over 27,000. And The greeks take over it seems. Everyone you see in all my classes are greek. And the people really take no interest in you if you are not. I have thought about joining the greeks just because it seems like you have to, but i dont really like the whole idea of paying for friends and the fact that they beat the **** out of their pledges here and if they dont give a damn who you are now, then why would they if you pay so much to be in it($3,500 semester)? And there is no individualism in it. Everyone dresses and acts the same way, just pisses me off. It is ridiculous what they wear and how they act just to fit in. But i guess the question is where to go to meet non greeks? Most of my classes are filled with all greek obviously. And the bars are 21 ^ around here.

What school do you go to where the greek community "runs" campus, yet dues are 3,500 a semester? This sounds odd, to say the least.

Join them. Knowing that system personally, if you're not a greek at Bama, you miss out on a significant part of the culture of that campus.

Honestly, the greek community gets a **** rap, most of it undeserved. But know what you're in for. PM me if you want the full, honest truth.

Tough situation. If it's not for you, then it's not for you. I just hope that your "hate" for the Greek is warranted. Try it out, what is the worst that can happen? I wasn't big into Greek life, but I was very socially active in athletics in college. In ten years will this really matter?

I started my own fraternity.

Pi Omega Theta

Made up a bunch of t-shirts, cut Greek letters out of plywood and erected them above the door to my rented house.

I am more familiar with the Greek scene of Thucydides than I am with the fraternity subculture. Other than honorary fraternities, I never had anything to do with fraternities. However, my stepson has been very active in Kappa Sigma throughout his unending undergraduate education. The notion that fraternities "beat the **** out of pledges" seems very archaic. Both the "nationals" and college administrations are very down on that sort of thing. My boy was very involved in getting the chapter of Kappa Sigma at CSULB reconsituted and getting their charter back from the national organization after it had been suspended for hazing, which they eventually succeeded in doing. At the moment, Sigma Chi is under suspension there for hazing.

One of my very oldest and best friends was president of his fraternity. He said about the only "ordeal" he had to undergo in become a member was consuming very large quantities of alcohol--I guess to see if he could hold his liquor or perhaps on the notion "in vino veritas" and that a man's true character comes out when he's drunk. This would have been about 48 years ago. I think because of deaths they have cracked down on these drinking ordeals. On the other hand, he does have the fraternity's letters branded on his arm!

That $3,500 per semester is strange. My boy's dues are $300 a semester. (I know, I pay them.) If the $3,500 includes room and board at the fraternity house, then that doesn't seem like a bad deal.

How big is your son's school? It's probably different at bigger schools. My brother is in KA at a small school and dues are as you mentioned at my school this high price is normal. Also the frats here seem like they are always in trouble with hazing of some kind, But they never get in that much trouble with it. Maybe its harder to bust them with so many people?? Its probably easier to crack down on little ones. When my brothers frat got in trouble for hazing they got in big trouble, here not so much.
