Son of Brummell -- the interest in uniforms goes back a lot further than Edward VIII's father and grandfather. The Windsor coat was introduced in 1779 and there is a theory that it was based on a uniform of Frederick the Great's (there are several portraits of him wearing a red and blue tailcoat). There is also a Gainsborough portrait of George III wearing a Windsor Coat.

That's a great portrait. I've seen it many times over the years in books, and maybe a museum, but I cannot remember which. Where is that Gainsborough? Maybe I saw a repro. somewhere....

The Gainsborough is in the Royal Collection. It shows George III wearing the full dress version of the coat, with gold braid. http://www.abcgallery.com/G/gainsbor...borough88.html

By the way, does anybody know which of his "personal tailors" is making his morning suit for the wedding?
I heard that he wants to dress up as a tampon. Possibly Procter & Gamble?

Hi, sorry for reviving a (fairly old) thread, but just wanted to ask what colour the trousers on the Duke of Cornwall is. I know that when you get a midnight blue dinner suit, it's customary to get the trousers in midnight blue. The Duke's trousers look black, so I was wondering if it's acceptable to pair a non-velvet blue dinner jacket with black trousers? Thanks guys.

Trousers look grey but difficult to tell from the picture. By strict rules of black tie you should not wear black trousers with midnight blue jacket. Do not use the Duke of Cornwall as an example, as the thread notes he is not wearing a dinner jacket in these pictures in the first place.
