Is it ok wear a tweed herringbone jacket with a gingham check shirt?

I don't know if there is a rule against combining spring/summer and fall/winter patterns? Seems like there would be but I don't think it's too offensive in this case (brown coat, blue shirt)...

My concern would be the scale of the patterns-- how close are they?

Hard to tell without a picture, but hell, the British invented tweed and they mix patterns all the time, so why not?

Cool. Went ahead and did it. There wasn't a problem with the scale of pattern - a med/large herringbone and a small check. Thanks all.

Goodness, it had better be permissable: the tweed herringbone/checked shirt combo is classic farmer-wear! (And I mean that in a good way, not in an Ernest, "brown is for farmer" way). Think of all those pictures of posh Brits on their country estates...

IMO the classic Tattersall check is eminently more suitable with herringbone tweed than any Gingham check.

I don't see a problem with it. I recently had a Donegal tweed jacket made, and my shirt of choice with it is a navy blue gingham check.

Sorry didn't take a picture last night, had to re-enact this morning...

I'm not all that crazy about the tie - its vintage YSL that I thrifted for $1 and havent worn yet. I figured it would be less boring with a checked shirt.



Worn with slightly lighter than navy pants and brown AE medallioned captoes.
