My advice on the big knit sweaters like this is this: Order at least one size down. The Small, based on my experience, is a "fits all" size. It appears to me to be made to fit--and look good--on anyone who's normally a Small to a Large. If you're normally in XL, you might want to go to the Medium. It's very weird. I don't own any other Small sizes in anything. The only explanation I can think of is that it must have a lot to do with the material itself, that is, the knit wool, which will be bulky--and which also has a tendency to grow a bit.
Oh damn, I usually wear a M in J.Crew shirts so I bought both the Black Watch Wool jacket and the Spencer Jersey Shawl in M.. hope they fit.

Any experiences with the university coat?

I tried one on today. I am 6'0 and about 140 pounds, but keep in mind that over the next year I am trying to gain 30-40 pounds of muscle (an almost impossible feat).

The small university coat fit fine in the body, but the sleeves felt short and tight. The medium felt too big, but might be fine if I grow into it.

It was also a bit rougher than I expected it to be, texture-wise.

Was liking the sales over the weekend. Picked up some camp socks, suede shearling gloves and a cashmere cap.

How's the in store prices right now? Significantly better than website sale prices? I'm kinda jealous of places where there's still tons of pieces left come sale time but in NYC J Crew gets picked clean pretty fast.

I just got my funnelneck today. Very nice and good fit, but it could be just a little slimmer but no biggie.. Jcrew Really stepped it up this season.

I have officially OD'ed on Jcrew. This past weekend, I procured three OCBD's (one of which was the black and white flannel I wore in my last WAYWT) a shawl neck sweater, a cable knit sweater, a tie, and suede ankle boots. I don't need anymore. ****.

Actually I still want that patchwork cardigan. **** me.

EDIT: Nevermind, that ***** gone, didn't even notice it disappear....

They regularly have free shipping codes if you buy over $150

Here is how you get free shipping - and yes you can stack it with another promo code.

1. Find a mistake on their website (not a difficult task if you know their product reasonably well.)

2. E-mail [email protected] and act like a good samaritan politely advising them of their mistake.

3. Within one hour I received a message thanking me. It stated "If you decide to place an order with us please reply to this message with your new order number and they will waive the shipping cost."

I really splooged a big load - too much good **** so this saved me $20 on shipping. Be forewarned however that it may delay your shipment a couple days. I thought it was taking too long to ship so I called and they said the order was put on hold to ensure the shipping cost was removed. Then again I'm sure they got overloaded with orders during last weeks 30% off Holiday sale so I'm sure that contributed to the delay.

I don't think it's a very good coat (the cut's weirdly boxy, the fabric isn't particularly impressive, and the design always seems pretty bland to me), but if you're set on it (and at 30% off the sale price, at least it's finally at a reasonable price), get the medium. As much as this forum loves sizing down, it's really not something you can do that easily, especially on things with clearly defined shoulders in heavy fabrics. Depending on how wide your shoulders are and how much weight you plan on gaining, you may really need a large, but at 140 pounds, that'll be at bare minimum two years of hard training away.

Or just call them up and tell them you're a student.

Significantly worse. J Crew really does have the internet's stupidest shipping policy, though. Not only are they ludicrously high, but they keep charging me more as I buy more things. With the exception of this one sale, they've done a pretty good job so far of ensuring that I never ******* order anything from them.
