Recommend to me some melancholy country music

I love the haunting and wistful sounds of the steel guitar and other common country instruments. However I'm almost completely unfamiliar with the world of country music, both classic and contemporary. Anybody care to recommend some? Bluegrass is good too.

I'm not a big C&W fan, but there are a few I like. If you want an excellent sad song, try So Lonesome I could Cry. I like both Hank Williams' version and BJ Thomas' (from the 60s). I always thought that one line was particularly a great sad line: "Have you ever seen a robin weep?" How could a robin be sad?! I guess in Hank's perspective robins wept a lot. Patsy Cline is also great.

A contemporary suggestion: Cross Canadian Ragweed's "Sick and Tired."

And all of Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker album. Especially "Call Me On Your Way Back Home," "O My Sweet Carolina," and most of all "Come Pick Me Up."

If you're looking for real old-time country, look elsewhere; otherwise, those songs are amazing.

I'm far from a hick. I hate country music, it just reminds me of growing up around country folk, which brings back good memories.

+1

You should also check out Steve Earle. Not everybody's favorite, but he's doing some cool stuff.
