I really love this even if the design reminds me a little too much of one of those outdoor flood lamps.

Just that under your definition of "good design" this sucks. It's okay as sometimes a person should allow themselves to buy something like this just because it strikes their fancy. I wish I could find a picture of that coffee table you had too. I hated it but endorsed your purchase of it (think you returned it though?) as you seemed to like it so much.

Somehow I picture Pio sitting in his dorky lounge chair having a nice glass of wine and an iPad waiting for the next foo.gif post.

You seriously don't get the difference between assessing the design of a vase/object versus a lounge chair?

Yes, that first table was a regrettable decision. I was the one who said so.

Never said I'm error proof. Half the shit I talk about on this forum are mistakes made. When are you going to fess up to yours?

Hey I give you credit for sticking up for the dorky chair. I kind of want to try one myself now. biggrin.gif

You are now going to draw a distinction between a vase vs. lounge chair in terms of this discussion? Nice one.

No one is error proof and it's just fucking furniture. And while you might feel my lounge chair is a mistake, I do not, but you and I function (SWIDT?) a bit differently.

Yeah, stupid distinction. My bad. I'm going to go sit on my vase and watch some TV.

Couldn't the same be said about you?  90% of the stuff you post or talk about buying people shoot down, but you continue to defend it and that it is "design" and we just don't know "design."

No you absolutely couldn't say the same thing about me. Whether you like what I post, or whether I like what Pio posts, is not the point I'm making. Pio is declaring that he doesn't take design or furniture very seriously . . . in a thread for people to discuss design and furniture. You might hate everything I like, but I certainly take the subject seriously and am committed to refining my taste in it.

The flippant, vapid dismissal of things is what's annoying to me--not the mere fact that people disagree. If anyone wants to write some thoughtful, rigorous criticism, I'd be happy to engage!

Goddamn.

Are you going to draw a distinction, in terms of the current conversation, between a chair and a table now? In terms of this current conversation the actual use of the object is irrelevant as long as it falls within the scope of furniture and furnishings. You're trying to lawyer in a distinction as I tossed up a clear example that counters your boldly defined and asserted precepts. Further, my comment that it's just fucking furniture means I'm not drawing some transcendent meaning or bestowing a special category to "couches that make me more social as they force me to sit up straight." It doesn't mean I don't like to see what people post and read what they have to say. It doesn't mean I don't enjoy the topic. It just means at the end of the day I don't hold furniture in the reverence you obviously do. The very fact you feel I'm being "flippant" about fucking furniture shows, no matter how much you'll try to deny this, you are bestowing special metaphysical qualities to things that one farts into.

Also, I'm pretty slow to dismiss things here, and probably am one of the more supportive folks for people's choices, whereas my choices are pretty much automatically impuned. There's another way we differ: while it would be nice if other folks liked my stuff I really don't give a fuck about that either.

1. A vase is decorative object, not a piece of furniture. It is primarily made to be looked at, not to be used. This is not a lawyerly distinction. I'm not sure how I can be more clear without being condescending.

2. Your usage of "transcendent" and "metaphysical" in this context is confusing. My earlier point was quite simple: since you don't care for the aims of good design, it is unclear what you can take from or contribute to a design discussion.

First, if you're allergic to vapidity, modern design may not be the hobby for you. Have you ever read any of the descriptions/explanations/justifications that designers -- or at least their copywriters -- attach to their work?

Second, there have been lots of substantive comments about your lamps. I've made a couple myself. They might not be up to your hermeneutical standards, but there you are.

Finally, your vase is a joke.

It was a joke when you bought it. It is a joke now. Trust me. That vase is not the design hill you want to die on.

Explain to me how this is good design.  To me, it is less functional than just about every other set of shelves I have ever seen.
