Here are some rough 3d diagrams. The couch is a chesterfield type sofa, the far chair is a Milo Baughman recliner, the two other chairs Kaare Klint safari chair. The idea was to have the Potence come from the near wall to the right of the opening in the side view and hang centered over the coffee table.

It seems that you may not want to add another classic piece in a dark material to that setup. What about a white lacquer lamp hanging from the ceiling. Or even crystal.

We can't mount anything to the ceiling which is the issue since it is building concrete. I actually thought about trying to get a pivot arm and hanging a more traditional type of chandelier off of it for a modern/classic hybrid, but I wasn't convinced it would look good and I am not sure about how well an arm would do with a chandelier hanging off of it.

Thats a nice rendering, I would like to add a few comments. Hold off on the lamp until you sort out the remainder of this living room, no sense in driving yourself crazy about it just yet. The context that you're considering using it in is a little uncomfortable. I assume this space is for relaxed gatherings, and the lamp will be interrupting this by being right in the middle of the conversation and blinding everyone with it's bare bulb. I would replace it with floor lamps.

The Baughman recliner requires alot more room than you have dedicated to it. It's no different than a chair and ottoman because of the space it consumes which is at least 6' in length. In this sort of layout it would be more typical to have a chaise in that space. Since your space does not really allow for it I would consider another small scale lounge chair if you feel like you need more seating.

Consider something like the Wegner 'Easy' chair which is a chair that looks nice on its own (rather than in a pair).

Straighten the klint chairs, ditch the table in between. People in those chairs should be using the coffee table for their drinks and you don't have the space to otherwise consume with tables.

That object in the corner in a light color adds to the crowding in this room. If you felt absolutely compelled to have something there, for me it would be a tall thin table and a sculpture.

Just my opinion, I would like to see a smaller scale sofa combined with the Klint chairs.

The table in the middle of the Klint chairs will probably not happen. The thing in the corner was supposed to be a bar cart, but with kids, it may not happen at all.

I am a bit less concerned about the crowding since the room is open into the dining area on one side and has floor-to-ceiling windows on the other sides with views of the city, so it feels ridiculously spacious and we are trying to make it feel a bit more intimate if anything.

The recliner is pretty much a must-have since it replaced my wife getting one of those horrible glider chairs to breastfeed, so I will just have to shuffle things around for now - maybe put the Klint on the side and the recliner out into the room or something.

Will probably hold off on the lamp for now to see how the room pans out and post some real pics in a month or so when all the furniture is in.

Akatsuki, you wouldn't by any chance live quite close to Pies n' Thighs would you? Just from the rendering and the description I feel like we live in the same building. Now that would be a small world...

Gentlemen,

I need to buy a new office chair. I've narrowed it down a bit but I'm still open minded. Does anyone have any personal experience with the Herman Miller Aeron Chair and the Humanscale Liberty Task chair? I'm trying to decide between the two and would appreciate any feedback.

The Liberty Chair:

The Aeron Chair:

Thanks,

have you sat in either?

pretty much the only consideration that matters.

FWIW, I sit in an Aeron at work and its great but probably not the absolute perfect chair for my body type (I just think there have been some pretty clever designs in the past 20 years that are ergonomically superior for the average person)

edit: one thing I don't like about a lot of chairs (and my size B aeron is ok about this but not as good as other chairs) is when they get in the way of letting your elbows move back. The backs are either too high or too wide and thus can interfere with your arms...that liberty chair looks like it might have those problems.

I have an Aeron. It's quite nice. But I'm not sure I really notice the difference between office chairs. I rather loved my old chair and it was an ancient POS by most people's standards.

I will give you that the Aeron is nice and cool compared to cloth chairs.

I have sat in the Aeron several times before and never been that impressed. Just not my thing, but the support and overall comfort always felt lacking.

Recently I tried out the Embody from Herman Miller and fell in love with it. Easily the most comfortable and best supporting office chair I have ever sat in. The looks may prove divisive to many, but I think the design is fine. It's a little on the pricey end, but if you can swing it I would give one of them a shot.

Right now I am actually using a Aeron knock off that my office provided me. The lumbar support is horrid, but I have made up for this by adding one of these. It has done wonders for me, even if It's not a pretty arrangement. The added support was desperately needed for the chair since I have been working from home. I'd recommend one of them to anyone who can't afford a high end office chair, but has been feeling a lot of back and shoulder pain. At $80, it's a steal.

One day I'll upgrade to the Embody unless something better comes along.
