Let me add that I don't think that innovative use of new material is 'required' for something to be new and interesting but it is one worthwhile approach. I would certainly like to see you avoid something gimmicky and there is nothing interesting to me about a piece of contemporary furniture that looks like an almost exact copy of a Krefeld sofa.

Well, that one wasn't in the cards anyway, so no worries there. I've been trying to get up to speed on modern furniture/interior design, and the stuff does all seem very derivative of MCM or some other vintage. Or it is rather extreme like the Inch. So something humanistic in approach, but not bound to the past would be ideal.

And let's not even get started on art collecting which has been a complete morass...

Look at some of Jasper Morrison's stuff. It may at first seem plain, but each piece is really boiled down to the absolute essentials while retaining a great sense of humor. It tends to mesh very well with mid century works, because it is clearly inspired by, but it tends to be a bit more human in scale, and extremely light in appearance.

Or Tom Dixon, just because he is probably the most interesting and talented designer of the recent generation.

Morrison reminds me of Hay and Muji, not in a bad way though.

Dixon is great, the best, I don't know, Marc Newson and Jaime Hayon are up there as well.

New Moroso chairs, they could be really cool in a nice contemporary setting.

Newson is fantastic, and I generally prefer his pices to Dixon's, but Dixon strikes me as more interesting, more intellectually compelling. Morrison has absolutely perfect proportion and a great sense of humor, both of which distinguish him from a lot of designers who might be like him. I don't know if anybody has ever been better with proportion.

Something under $7K, designed in the last 10 years, and statement but not flashy. Any recs along those lines?

There are tons of designers and furniture makers in Brooklyn. Having something custom made for you could be cool.

Mostly they are either of the Uhuru type stuff or just doing crap MCM with antlers stuck everywhere. I am sure there is better around, but I haven't done a survey of the local talent beyond what I see at the flea and around.

I want either his trattoria chairs or tate chairs for my kitchen.

Anyone have any recs for something similar to the Potence lamp besides the Model 265 (which is more of a reading-type light anyway)? We need something slightly longer than the Potence for our room and our plan to have one custom made has been derailed by ridiculous freight costs. Looking for a local fabricator right now.

For the dining room?

No, we wanted to do it for the living room centered right over the coffee table which requires a 7' 8" horizontal reach from the wall. The standard Prouve is about 10 inches too short, the Model 265 has more of a reading lamp vibe.

Originally we were going with a guy who makes custom versions of the Potence, but he is in Las Vegas and shipping something that long is just ridiculously expensive since it is LTL. Currently talking to some people here in NYC, but haven't got a good sense of it yet.

I'm curious to see a picture of the room, if you are ok with posting it.

I will post a diagram since there is nothing in it right now as we are doing the floors, etc. I'll dig a 3d visualization up which won't be perfect but should get the general idea.
