Someone made a chair that looks a lot like an Eames shell chair. Hundreds of companies have done this. You have some chairs from one of these companies.

Its not like they were long lived well known companies--they made their money selling a bunch of knockoffs. They probably weren't even a real company but just the name of some importer who was bringing them in from china...the total extent of their corporate infrastructure was probably an office with a phone and a fax machine and maybe a warehouse on the outskirts of a major metropolitan area.

That explanation covers it. I didn't know if it was identifiable by people who know things about chairs, or if it was just a generic chair.

It's iconic if it's original, generic if it is not. I drove past one of the knockoffs being used by construction workers in a parking garage and I think that is an adequate use of the copies.

I think I'm at the tail end of the refinishing project. I decided to brush on the final coat of Waterlox because I couldn't wipe on a coat and not have it look all streaky when it dried. I'm having a hard time keeping little bits of dust off of the finish, but maybe I shouldn't worry about it too much since I will be waxing it eventually.

Thanks, i'll probably do them soon, though I'm not sure what to do with my bar in general.

The trouble with brushing on a finish in a home shop, even the cleanest are usually dirty enough that particles will land in the finish. Let it dry for a few days, then you could use #0000 steel wool (finest) to remove the particles if you don't mind a satin finish.

Thanks again for the advice! I really appreciate it. I do have some #0000 steel wool, so I will give that a shot before waxing. The final coat is looking really nice after a few hours of drying.

I ordered two maple with zinc dowel bases from Modern Conscience, and I'm thinking I might have to use Waterlox on the dowels. They will come oiled, but I can't see that standing up to shoe scuffs all that well.

Here's one I did in Santos Rosewood, not sure if I ever posted it up on here. Finished in waterlox high gloss.



This is the modern substitute for Brazilian rosewood, it has a very similar grain and color, but is sustainable.

I suppose my works fall under the woodworking category, I think my work would be categorized as something between modern and craftsman. Though I have some new tables being finished that are definitely modern.

I don't know if I will ever be able to purchase Finn Juhl of the Era (by France & Sons, ect.) but one collection is certainly putting out a spectacular licensed product. Original wall sofas auction off at about 200k.
