Knit ties: point bottom or square bottom

My major hangup with knit ties are the square bottoms. As unpopluar as knit ties are, I feel that if point bottoms were more common, more people would wear them.

I also suspect that the square bottom fans are often hardcore knit fans, a small group with rarefied tastes.

Who makes point bottoms anyway? No brands come to mind though I've certainly seen one here and there. Do these companies specialize in making point bottoms, or do they primarily make squares and just do a few points on the side?

I don't yet own any knit ties, but I have considered buying some point bottom ones. I must admit I don't really get square bottom ones...

For some reason, the knit ties with a point bottom look weird to me. When I imagine a knit tie in my head, I see a square bottom.

I'd say it's the equivalent of a knotched lapel DB jacket....it's just....weird.

I've got a wool/silk knit with a point bottom by Canali. I've never seen a mono-silk knit with a point bottom though, the Canali ones are square as well.

I totally agree with your first post, Kent. But so far, I'm the only one. Sam Hober makes his grenadines with a pointy bottom. Don't know if that counts.

I agree with grim and Kent, but I'm not a fan of knit ties. I have a couple of wool grenadines with point bottoms, and if I do purchase a knit tie, then it would have to have a point bottom.

I think the square bottom is the only way to go. But it makes little difference, my problem is length. Nobody makes bespoke knit ties .

As many I found my love for knit ties around this board.
By now I have 6 of them and wear them more often then any other tie I have.

Before owning my first knit tie, I wasn't quite sure about the square end but now I couldn't imagine a proper knit tie without this characteristic. IMO if you don't like the square end, you should stay with grenadine or woven silk ties.

A point bottomed knit tie is.. well... pointless.

Square bottom knits are only for Brown grads who work for the ACLU.

I only wear knits with sweaters because I don't like the square bottom either. Problem solved. Three piece would probably work too.

I much prefer a square bottom on a knit tie as opposed to a point bottom. As the above poster mentioned though a lot of the time I wear knit ties with a sweater or pull-over so it really doesn't matter regardless.

It would be difficult to make a true bespoke knit tie as they generally come in tubes so altering the width would be a challenge. The length and shape of the end are variables that can be worked with. One of our long term projects is bespoke knit ties - although I am not sure how to handle widths yet. We could get a large width tube and probably cut it open and make it narrower. When time allows we will experiment.

Not to let too much slip, but I'm starting a business this fall/winter that will include a bespoke knit tie program. Silk, cashmere, wool, cotton, solids, stripes, spots, angled and flat ends.

All should be announced in about a month.
