Played by who????

My thought is more strictly referring to the music itself rather than any particular artist or recording. Perlman and Heifetz each made technically fine interpretative recordings. Music buffs will also trot out Milstein, Menuhin, and some other great violinists. Again, opinions will vary.

Nevertheless, my favorite remains Wanda Wilkomirksa on the 1972 recording by the little known Connoisseur Society label. (Vinyl/Album CS-2040) She is at one with the music on this record. I find this oneness (subliminality or purity) lacking in other recordings. Her performance of the Partita was re-released by the Connoisseur Society in 2002 on part two of CD 4270.

I'm pretty sure my recording is a Heifetz. Nevertheless, I look forward to hunting down a version by Wilkomirksa, as per your recommendation. Thanks!

Here is an excerpt from the CD currently available through the Connoisseur Society website. The excerpt is only MP3. So that fact coupled with the limitation of most computer speakers won't give much fidelity. Otherwise, the vinyl can be found through some of the many search services. Another source is eBay. I see it there every once in a while with prices varying from twenty to fifty dollars.

This eBay seller is reliable. He used to have thousands of mint old vinyl albums. Lately his inventory is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down. I purchased a superb copy of the Wilkomirska vinyl from him last year to replace the original I purchased in 1972.

if you're talking classical, my vote goes for a nice Mozart Concerto.

otherwise, just about any of Aphex Twin's ambient pieces would do.
