try hair wax

ya wax will do the job, just look for a wax that isnt shiny, it usually will turn out greasy looking (therefore not matte like you want) ie: that brand "stiff s#@t" or whatever symbols it uses in the name...

Yeah it's difficult to determine exactly what was used but as far as basic suggestions, it is most likely a wax or clay. Something like American Crew Fiber or Bumble & Bumble Sumo Tech.

what makes this look like wax is his hair is completely dry with no surfer effect or any white residue. Just know that wax is very potent and u need a lot less of it then gel. Use a little bit since you are not spiking your hair but adding volume. And u should not see any wax on your hands when you do it just rub it through your fingers until u cant see it but u feel warm then slowly distribute. 95% you'll get the same look.

on the topic of wax; you know what kicks your ass in the face? aerosol wax. use/looks like hairspray bottle, but its vapoured wax. shit is off the hook. Word to the wise; dont breathe in when using haha. It just lingers in the air and tastes nasty in the back of your throat.
