Playboy

Is Playboy Magazine still relevant in this day and age?

If you think about, Playboy was kind of like StyleForum when it started. A publication that attempted to define men's style in terms of philosophy, music, clothing, news and of course, naked women.

So with the rise of the internet, the growth of alternative magazines and the widespread availability of porn, is Playboy still relevant?

I've never even looked through a Playboy so for me, it's not relevant.

Playboy, with its airbrushing and perfectly fake titted models, looks very sterile to me. I haven't laid my hands on a Playboy mag in probably 10 years. No wonder why Hugh is going bankrupt. His idea of beauty is bringing the whole magazine down.

I've never opened a Playboy magazine, but I have a fascination with Hugh Hefner.

Had huge relevance for me ... was the only mag that you could get underage at the local newsagent ... and I totally blame it for my fascination with big titted blondes with perfect white teeth

It was relevant in the 70's and 80's, but after, say, 94 or so it went downhill. In the 80's you could expect an actual woman to be featured - I mean women who are over 18 and have a real job. In the mid-90's all the centerfolds started looking the same, none were over 20, they all had plastic surgery, and being the centerfold was their stepping stone to an acting/modeling career.

Once I noticed that I was older than the centerfolds I lost interest quickly. The fashion is the same you'll find anywhere and while the fiction is still good (or was the last time I checked) - I'm not buying a Playboy just for the fiction. Now that I think of it the centerfold is pure fiction anyway.

True story: I had a subscription all throughout college and when I graduated I had them sent to my folks' house, cause that's where I lived post-graduation (I took a traveling job). I had also bought a print from the Playboy catalog (Laughing Jesus you pervs!) and when my subscription ran out, I got a card from them saying that Playboy was going to give me a one-year subscription, gratis.

That was, maybe 1996. They're still coming in the mail, and no one's seen a bill.

It's relevance is quickly diminishing and not just because of Hef's particular tastes in women. The content has gotten stale. It doesn't get top flight writers, the interviews are still decent, but not as good anymore, so for the man who wants strong articles and interviews with his T&A, he's out of luck. With the same pneumatic airbrushed blondes and no quality content, it's lost its way. And yes, people read Playboy for the articles.

Have a look through a 1960s era Playboy, sometime. They had some really good investigative articles on all sorts of current affairs. Some serious discussions on mens style and 'men's issues'. And half-naked women. I guess thats the sort of market that GQ is aiming for?

I did my MA on stuff that was going on in the mid 1960s. It was always fun to see the raised eyebrow of the librarian as I placed inter-library loan orders for back issues of Playboy.
