JK! 47, errr, 48.

No one noticed the origin of the term 'hooker'?

"Although the term today refers to the area bounded to the north by East Houston Street, parts of East Village are still known as Loisaida, a Latino pronunciation of "Lower East Sider."

This point of land on the East River was also called Corlears Hook under British rule. It was an important landmark for navigators for 300 years. On older maps and documents it is usually spelled 'Corlaers' Hook, but since the early 19th Century the spelling has been anglicized to Corlears. It was named after Jacobus van Corlaer, who settled there prior to 1640. In the 19th century, Corlaer's Hook was notorious for streetwalkers, who were called hookers. The original location of Corlaers Hook is now obscured by shoreline landfill. It was near the east end of the present pedestrian bridge over the FDR Drive near Cherry Street"

I grew up in Corlear's Hook and know the area well. People knew the term but nobody really used it - the neighborhood was just generic Lower East Side. The only place I saw it used was on a small ball field that had a sign saying Corlear's hook park. I thought it was near Montgomery Street but am certain that it sucked - all cement and too small for much other than restricted rules softball.

Bump:

Planning to meet up with some high school folks on Friday night. I need a recommendation for a bar in midtown, that possibly has a good beer selection and doesn't get too crowded on a Friday night. Its about 6-10 of us. Thanks.

If you're looking for nothing more than a solid bar with good taps, I suggest either Hibernia on 50th btw 9th and 10th or The Gaf on 49th btw 9th and 10th. The Gaf comes with a little more style and atmosphere. Hibernia is owned by some young Irish guys so it's got the Irish feel with a little bit of youth. I don't know where in Midtown you'll be (I mean, that could be 43rd and 5th so you'd be pretty damn far away) but if you're shading toward the West Side (say, Broadway or 8th Ave.) walk the extra 10 minutes.

well, we have picked Katwalk for now. On 35th on the corner of 5th, i think. Any opinions of the place?

In midtown, I recommend the Ginger Man. The beer selection is fantastic and they have killer hot dogs and soft pretzels. The crowd is usually 30 - 50s and heavily male, corporate types. It gets crowded after work, but the space is fairly large and I've always gotten a table.

Ginger Man is very god but I don't really like the crowd. Everyone I meet is a young to middle aged corporate type that has no connections to NYC. Still, a good place for beer. If you want something smaller Volcano Bar directly across the street is a cool spot owned by the same people. More of a booze bar. The Galway Hooker next door to Ginger Man is decent as well, a lot of big TV's. Surprisingly enough there is a smaller place called Rum and Castle not far away on 33rd between Madison and 5th. Great burgers, great beer selection (a lot of Abita) and a more relaxed crowd, I like the place. If you go further down there are some lesser known spots, the Black Door on 26th bw 6/7th (closer to 6th) is not well-known, only draw back for me is that they don't have a tap. Across the way between 6th and B'way are a few other bars one is called the Pig something or other. Not sure exactly but for some reason the Leffe Blonde they pour is better than anywhere else in the city + you can get pitchers and decent food specials. Rogue is directly on 6th however I am not a huge fan, its just okay unless you catch happy hour I am not a fan of Katwalk.

either the hard rock or espn zone. Nice crowd, great food, what else could you ask for?

In all seriousness, I actually went to the ESPN Zone once. While not the worst experience of my life, I can't imagine ever going back.

Sorry if this is too late, but Katwalk is...kind of "meat marketish." I would have suggested you check out the Stone Rose in the Time Warner Center (Columbus Circle). It's usually pretty chill.
