Field's can do it if you are willing to wait a few weeks. It will be expensive. Something like $20-25 per buttonhole that needs to be made. Give him a call.

London Tailor in Bethesda Md. He'll do it in a week. Make sure you are postive you like the length though because once you cut the holes you can't adjust the sleeve length.

PS, working buttonholes is a more descriptive term than surgeon cuffs.

I have head good success with Christopher Kim. Not cheap, but does very detailed work. Highly recommended.

+1 on London Tailor. He does great work, usually with a < 1 week turnaround, and will make sure you are 100% satisfied.

I haven't used Fields, but London charged me $40 to shorten the sleeves on a jacket with one working button hole. Hemming pants is $15 and darting a shirt is $15, if I remember correctly.

Field's does great work. It's a little more expensive, but it's worth it on a garment you really like.

The most extensive work I had done at Field's was an Oxxford suit I bought at Filene's for about $1K a year and a half ago. Bill Field cuffed the pants, took them in a little in the seat, and created four buttonholes on each sleeve. The price was about $250. Well worth it, I thought, considering the great deal on the Oxxford. The work was beautifully done. The buttonholes looked like Oxxford created them.

He's taking in the waist on my Oxxford jacket as we speak.

What's the cheapest tailor in DC to get some sleeves shortened. It may entail moving the buttons. I have a sportcoat that I bought at a thrift store that I don't want to put too much money into it.

Here's my situation. I purchased a nice suit on a recent business trip to Chicago. I used the store's alterations tailor, who reduced but did not the remove the lump behind the collar. I'm not flying back to Chicago and don't expect them to get it right on the second try without seeing me in the suit. I want to wear it to an important event next week.

Who in the DC area do you recommend that could lower the collar and do it within one week? It seems like a relatively basic alteration, but the material (the much-maligned Super 180s wool) may make this a more delicate job? I'm not sure the job requires Will Field's work (and he typically has a longer turnaround time than one week). Christopher Kim may be an option, though I could see him charging more than $100 once I got to the store.

In Alexandria, I have been pleased with alterations (basic stuff: cuffs and waist on trousers, sleeves on jacket) done by Elegant Rochee's on Duke Street in the Landmark area. They also do MTM (and perhaps bespoke) suits and shirts, so I would think their in-house tailor could do button holes as well.

In DC, I've had good success with Joe Sauro for basic alterations.

I've also had work done by Christopher Kim in DC. Does good work, but quite pricey.

Years ago, I had Georges de Paris do some alterations to a suit. Work was good but service was poor. I expect that is because his focus is on his bespoke work. (Plus, he's a nutter.)

Off topic: Anyone else notice how many tailors have photos with presidents for whom they have apparently made suits? Sauro and de Paris in particular come to mind. One gets the impression that every new President is handed a list of tailors whom he must appease.
