despos: i agree. i did a piece a couple of years ago on canned spanish seafood. there's amazing stuff available. so easy, too. open a can, put it on toast, score.
philosophe: i'm a big ottolenghi fan. have only cooked from "plenty", but everything has been really delicious, and -- best for me -- way outside my normal comfort zone as far as flavor spectrum. i would describe it as kind of what i imagine nouvelle turkish might be like.

here's one thing i fixed last night. it's from Yotam Ottolenghi's "Plenty": eggplant with buttermilk, yogurt and pomegranate.
fyi: the plating isn't supposed to represent anything.

Are pomegranates out there already good? They are my favorite fruit, but the ones we are getting still suck.

Good to know, thanks. Will bide my time. Costco here gets really good and very large ones late in the season for like a dollar each. Basically the only reason I have a Costco membership.

I was skeptical when I first had them, but I can eat a tin by myself. I do love the razor clams and pulpo in gallego. Also the baby sardines.

It is here in Berkeley. FG mentioned a place in LA who carries the same stuff. I am sure he remembers even at his old age. IMO, you can't do a lot better for hors d'ouvres than these cans.

oh yeah: Baron, get your butt down to Harbor City. La Espanola. Prepare to be amazed. Go on Saturday and you eat the second-best paella in town.

Thanks! Do they sell paella to go on Saturday or do they serve it on the premises?

And do they sell it any closer to civilization?

Like I said, Berkeley.

BTW, where is the best paella in LA? Foodguy's house?

they sell it on premises, but i believe you can get it packed to go. you really ought to go ... they make most of the spanish chorizo that's sold in the us ... really great stuff and about half the price of if y ou buy it at whole foods.
best paella in la is at jose andres' bazaar.

Russ, or Matt, what are the brand/producers of this awesome canned seafood? I'd like to try some but am relarively certain they wont be as readily available in quincy as berkeley.
