In the L.A. school district, we also had "taco boats."

Smelled salami cooking at a bakery today and had a sudden craving for square pizza. I lived in like 6 or 7 different American school districts and there's definitely good square pizza, bad square pizza out there... nothing like pairing some pizza with corn and green beans and a chocoloate milk.

We used to get things like Shepard's Pie, fish and chips, and meatloaf. Poutine was always on the menu.

The ubiquitous defrosted chicken nugget turned me off of chicken for years.

Had the same experience with seafood because of a school fish sandwich that was logged in stale grease but still frozen at the middle. I did not touch any form of seafood again until just a couple years ago. I actually grew up by the ocean in Australia and had good memories of eating fresh fish, but yeah that one sandwich turned me off fish and seafood forever. Somewhere along the way too, a Korean friend's mom was boiling squid in her house one day when I came over and that was like a nail in the coffin.

Our cafeteria was frequented only by first semester freshmen.

I went for pizza in India a number of years ago. The options were "veg" or "non-veg". I ordered the "veg". Big mistake. Corn, peas and carrots.

i think it's really cool that you call masa your "cafeteria."

There's one school dinner dessert I really miss, that's Manchester tart. "Manchester tart" probably means something else these days.

Sole braised with little clams, pommes boulangère

That is beautiful, although if you had made the potatoes into a heart shape, I think I would have <3 it even more.

Thanks, Rambo. It's kind of a bitch to do, especially for four plates, but those little potatoes are creamier than creamy; dreamier than dreamy.

It was a sunny day and vines strangled the roadside bushes. The roads blushed with color – red dots, white puffs, and purple stains. Sun-ripened berries hung supple and plump, dangling on the vines or splattered on the road. It is the best time of the year anywhere. Of the place, in the place, the potatoes on a plate – this was Connecticut, September, plated. those little potatoes are creamier than creamy; dreamier than dreamy. Each broke down differently in the bite. Herbaceous tones inflected each slurp – so many dimensions and angles to the flavor. It could be served as dessert; instead, it was the official welcoming to MGM's– this is why we’re here. The snacks were good but this was profound.
