^ Were you recently diagnosed with a gluten allergy or Celiac? Previously noticed your comment in the wine thread about how you're off beer.

Sucks, man.

I brown down a metric fuckton of onions til they're soup brown, I toss in minced ginger and garlic in proportion to the final quantity, add a little bit of canned tomatoes if I feel like it, and then use a pre-mix curry paste like Patak's in the can til it tastes right - then hit that with the immersion blender. Adjust spices and seasonings as you see fit, sometimes I add a bit of red wine vinegar. That's basically my gravy and takes the most work.
I saute some chicken in oil (clarified butter of ghee, whateva) - add some potatoes to saute. Add that to your gravy to simmer for about an hour. I like cauliflower so I add that towards the last 30 minutes or so.
I drizzle a bit of yoghurt in, top with some ginger shreds and a chiffonade of cilantro.
A vegetable raita goes with it nicely and is not much work.

Sweet, thanks. Some thai curry chili with carrot raita sounds like it'll be good.

Brandade, skate wing, fried chicken sandwich, oysters at Son of a Gun. All good but they drowned the brandade in a mustard sauce. Couldn't taste the fish at all really.

Quick recap of my HK/Macau food trip - did not have enough time for all the places we attempted. Next time we'll not make the mistake of trying to stuff our faces with two fine dining meals in the same day, just doesn't work out.

Robuchon au Dome - Macau's only 3 star restaurant, used to be in a different hotel and called something else. Decent menu prices and 8,000 labels on the iPad wine list.

Nice enough dining room with a great view and a domed ceiling, but getting to the actual restaurant was a bit hectic and dealing with the Chinese new year's crowds was unpleasant.

We sat down and drank a bottle of Pol Roger Churchill - cheaper on their menu than it goes for in Japan at a supermarket.

we got the Macau tour, ate some egg tarts, ruined my Crockett and Jones walking around the cobblestone streets, lost some money on the roulette table, and then came back to Hong Kong and ate at Sun Tong Lok (was 3 star last year, 2 star in the 2012 book) - it's 2 or 3 starred status seems very iffy. Anyway, we were still full, and tired - this ended up being a meal we just picked at, and we didn't order much. We basically came for the shark's fin soup, so we got that.

I felt like a drink, wine list was no more than 15 labels, 6 were Lafite

Shark's fin soup in superior stock, cooked on a cart next to the table. Served with this fantastic vinegar. The shark's fin had strands as big as some angel hair pastas. I think this was about $50 a bowl or so.

apart from that, we just picked what sounded alright on the menu. Some of the seafood specials were outrageously priced, like $900 abalone and stuff. We skipped those.
I ordered a wagyu and vegetable dish, it turned out to be 'beef and broccoli', lol. The beef though, was amazing, and possibly one of the best preparations of beef I've ever had in my life. It was delicious.

spicy chicken and vegetables turned out to be kung pao chicken, lol. Again, kinda lol when it got put down on the table, but great tasting.
417508_10100658380043070_15904009_54251248_652154233_n.jpg

That was all we ordered there, just too full and tired of eating at that point. the food was good. It was very complex tasting and full of quality flavors. My order was kinda lol.
We asked the waiter for a recommendation on a bar with a city view, and instead the guy waited til we paid our check and then took us all the way down out of the building, walked down the street like a half kilometer, took us up to a rooftop deck bar and got us in without a reservation. The actual dinner service was not really Michelin 3-star level, but the guy going out of his way on our request at the end was pretty impressive and something I'll remember for awhile.

Robuchon looks great. Except for that village of cabbage.

ate pho for lunch the next day, wasn't LA pho but it was the best pho I'd eaten since being in LA last summer. Michelin bib gourmand pho place, lol. They are trying really hard down there with the Michelin guide, it's a full size Michelin guide but there's only 60 stars, so the rest are just a bunch of listings.

Dinner was at Amber, 2-star place at the top of one of the Mandarin Orientals. Probably made the mistake of ordering the truffle menu rather than the regular degustation. Did not really like the food or wine at this place, wish we'd gone somewhere else in hindsight.

nearly raw egg custard, crispy chicken skin bits. None of the truffle really came through so this wasn't that pleasant to eat.

very average dessert and petit fours later, and that was it
429815_10100658379234690_15904009_54251222_915584216_n.jpg

all in all, it was one of those hotel French places with a huge kitchen able to pull off some nice looking dishes, but the flavors were just not there and reminded me a lot of some things I've eaten at Gagnaire - that is, some of the less than good plates. Typical Michelin bait service.

Should have taken a pic of this.

Mrs. Piob had a new low carb "pizza" recipe she found for me. Cooked a head of cauliflower in the mic, then put that with a couple cups of shredded, low moisture mozzarella, garlic, an egg, and spices in the food processor. Take the mush and form two crusts on a baking sheet. Bake at 425 until browned. Take out, put on toppings, sauce, and cheese and broil until done. It's taste is remotely pizza but completely good.

Well, I sat around with my dog after dinner reading while my wife did dishes. There may have been a nut scratch or two, but no TV.

You marred your all-American evening with reading? Hopefully it was a Glenn Beck or Bill O'Reilly book.

Interesting choices to fulfill the "all-American" requirement. Saul Alinsky cries bitter tears.

Smoking some more ribs today. Have not decided if I'm staying home or going to one of the SB parties we were invited to so decided to smoke ribs. If we go I can bring them and if not vacuum seal and freeze in dinner sized portions for us.
