+1000 Good taste.
Anyone who wants to get into Cognacs or try a real drink for the first time purchase any of the ones mentioned in Huntsman's post.

The good rule of thumb when it comes to Cognacs is (the same rule applies to Champagnes) if you saw commercial on TV, in a magazine or heard the name before avoid it like a swill that it is.

Ron Zacapa 23 year is on par with many cognacs in the same price range. That's my standard rum and pretty much the limit of my knowledge.

As cognacs go, any of the VSOPs make good mixers, with Camus being particularly suited for coffee. For XOs, Delamain Pale & Dry is a benchmark for Grande Champagne XO and is a good value for the price. This is the first cognac where I actually got a hint of grape in the finish, which was an epiphany of what cognac is all about.

Today I found Hine Rare Fine Champagne and have been sipping it this evening. Quite a treat!

Then there's Tesseron.

Actually though, I am talking about the normal line, the 20 year in particular. Go to D&M on Sacramento and Fillmore. They have the best selection in the city, and super nice, super knowledgeable staff. I really like the two younger Gourmel bottlings as well.

Ferrand's prices are going up a fair amount (they may already have), but there is a very nice sampler pack of four 250ml bottles which includes up to the 30 year old for about $40.

rotten grapes in the form of cognac is more enjoyable than wine.

Love Cognac, if only we can get the rappers to stop rapping about it. Bastards.

Just had a bottle of Richard Hennessey. Lasted a week.

+100000000000 for Germain-Robin.

Martell is my favorite of the big houses, Delamain and Hine are great as well.

Spanish Brandies can be interesting too, i'm sipping some Cardenal Mendoza right now.

I only have the one bottle of cognac. Not sure what to get, once I'm done with the Louis XIII.

Nice cat. Pierre Ferrand Ancestrale at a minimum to start (over again).

Coming from you, that is a suggestion I will listen to, when the Louis is gone.

Thank you. The caveat is, if course, that I've never had Louis XIII, so I can't compare. It was, however, the best cognac I've ever tasted. But my experience of Cognac is not as wide as my experience of scotch, though it could be argued that the Ancestrale, comparatively, was a 'better' cognac than the 'best' scotch I've ever had (if arguing on price). On my birthday, I once almost ordered a glass of one of the rarest cognacs in the world, Courvoiser Succession J.L. (below), but was informed they were out of it. Saved me some money, I will admit, but I'm still a little bit sad about that. You only live once. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...51C0A96E958260 ~ H ps. No, it wasn't at Patroon, and it wasn't near that much.
