Ive pretty much always avoided shaving with a razor - it leaves my face too tender afterwords, so I usually just trim with a hair clipper and keep the stuble/5oclock shadow look, and only did close shaves with a razor for special occasions.

Now i just picked up a Philips electric razor to try out, so far no problems, my face still feels a little sensitive after but not too bad.

Usually 2 days after shaving with a razor id get little red bumps around my neck, is there any way to avoid that sorta thing?

Do you guys moisturize, or put alcohol or anything on your face after shaving ? It always has seemed like a bad idea to put anything on my face when its feeling so sensitive..

Any help is appretiated.

I've got sensitive skin too, and always use an electric razor. Get a decent one, change the blades and foils regularly and it'll give you a decent shave. You have to use something afterwards, I swear by Clinique's "Post Shave Healer". It's really more a moisturizer more than anything (lots of aloe) and it works beautifully. Another thing I like about it is that it doesn't have any fragrance so doesn't clash. It's about $20 for a small bottle that lasts me a good couple of months (you don't need much).

BTW - Clinique also makes a variation with "Beard Control" which I've tried and wouldn't recommend. Odd smell to it.

I splash on Aqua Velva aftershave splash, that's it.

Strange question it may seem, but are you black? If so, those red bumps are likely ingrown hairs, which are a problem for many men of African descent because the majority of shaving accoutrements are really designed with only whites in mind.

What you'd need to do is ditch the electric razor, and never ever use a razor with more than one blade. Get yourself a 'bump fighter', which is a razor marketed specifically for blacks, or make the investment and get yourself a double edge razor and badger hair brush.

Multibladed razors are bad enough to give most whites irritation and ingrown hairs these days, it must be a nightmare for black men using them.

But I only shave every second day to avoid skin irritation.

I slap myself violently several times, snarl, and tell myself I'm a "******* beast". Then I put on my game face.

Actually, I just use moisturizer. I find it works very well, as I never understood the need for a special after-shave product.

Ill try mosturizing, im always just scared itll cause a breakout or something.. but ill give it a go..

Do not buy an overly greasy moisturizer. The best one I have found is the Kiehl's SPF 15 moisturizer. Very non-greasy but lasts for a while and makes your skin really soft.

Like the OP, I too have resorted to sticking with the 5 o'clock shadow look for fear of getting pseudofolliculitis (which are those little bumps on your neck). I spoke with a dermatologist about this and he prescribed a product with a high percentage of benzoyl peroxide in it. Something like 5%. I would apply this after shaving every time. It seemed to work fairly well, but not perfectly. When that ran out I was using Neutrogena on-the-spot treatment which has 2.5% BP in it. Again works well but to no avail, not perfect. So I too have resorted to the perpetual evening look. So far, so good. GL to you!

I splash with cold water, then I cleanse it with Men-U Ultra Concentrate tea tree wash, and then apply Sharp's After Shave gel.

I know, since everyone here has seen American Psycho, the current thinking is to avoid aftershaves with alcohol. But frankly, alcohol isn't really bad for your face (the form of alcohol in aftershaves is NOT isopropyl, so no, you are not going to dry out). An aftershave splash with a high alcohol content is great for soothing razor burn and getting those red burns and blotches off your face if you tend to grind it up while shaving. It will burn like hell at first, but trust me, you'll learn to appreciate the burn. I've ran the whole gamut of high end British and German aftershave balms and splashes, and have settled on...go figure...Aqua Velva. Nothing makes my face feel better.

After shaving, I splash my face with cold water. Run an alum block over it. Then I rinse again. Then I either slap myself with aftershave, or dab with witchhazel-soaked cotton balls.

I use a witchhazel and ginger toner and then a non-greasy moisturizer.

I used Clinique for a brief period several years ago, and their products are great, but it got too expensive for daily use.
