Help me buy some pearls

I'm looking to buy some pearls for my lady . I have up to $1000 but I'd rather spend less than that. Any things to look for? Any good online resources/stores? She said she likes the colored ones. Thanks.

well the coloured ones youre buying will most likely be dyed. theres a candling method where you shine light though the back of the pearls in a dark room. the nacre is the layer surrounding the nucleus. (in cultured pearls, but youll be buying cultured). the thicker the better. other wise just read up about it. theres so much to know and see what kind you want.

If you want to learn more here is a good pearl forum http://www.pearl-guide.com/forum/south-sea-pearls/ There are several quality online vendors who post there. I think we also had a couple of pearl threads a few month ago.

The smaller freshwater pearls are often dyed. South Sea and Tahitian pearls are "colored" by their nature. Freshwater pearls have thicker nacre but are not better than Okoya, South Sea or Tahitian unless you are mostly concerned with durability.

in his price range, im pretty sure theyll all be enhanced in one way or another. if it isnt dying its another process. trust me, almost all pearls are enhanced.
