Good Salon/Haircut in Center City Philadelphia

I moved to Center City Philadelphia recently and have yet to find a good place to get a haircut. I'm looking to spend around $25-35+tip. I would be willing to spend a little more if necessary. I've tried a few places in the city (Christopher Markus and De Carlo). I was surprised at how terrible the haircuts were, considering they weren't cheap. I had a great place I went to when I lived in NJ, Studio 561, but it is a bit far for me to go as often as I would like. Any recommendations? I'm not looking for a barber.

I use Topper's at Rittenhouse Square. It's a bit more expensive than what you'd like to pay, but just about everyone who comes out of there looks good.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might check it out. If I do I'll post how it went here.

I'm very picky (I used to rent a Phillycarshare car and drive 30+ minutes each way out to Adolf Biecker in Wayne for haircuts) and can highly recommend Groom @ 1324 Locust Street. Ask for Joe (he's the owner and does a great job). Cost is $24. You'll need to call ahead for an appointment; the number is 215-545-2626.

@tjc4golf Thanks for the recommendation. I've passed Groom many times, but have never thought about going since it's a barber shop. However, I think I'm going to take your word for it and go. When I was in college I had a friend who told me about that place but he had a terrible haircut. Perhaps someone else cut his hair. The worst haircut of my life was at an American Male, so I'm extremly reluctant to go to another one.

So after all's said and done I went to Groom. Apparently the shop I had mentioned above was a different shop as Joe said he'd only been there for about a year. I loved the ambiance... jazz music, nice furniture and good magazines. Joe walked me through everything and he showed me a picture of what he had in mind for me. He's a nice guy also. He took his time and spoke about different things I could do with my hair which no one had ever said before. I had a very good haircut and it was only $24 + tip. Finally a good affordable place in Center City! Thanks again for the recommendation tjc4golf.

Groom used to be near Naked Chocolate cafe on 13th and Walnut and he just moved into the location he is at now. Great guy, and very good haircuts, esp for the price!

I've been a couple time's to Dave's on 4th St in Old City but I'll have to check out Groom. I'm paying $23+tip now but it sounds like Groom gives you more for your money.
