Honestly, when I run in the dark, it is a morning run on sidewalks. Running on sidewalks is FAR FAR FAR more problematic for me as concrete is 10 times harder than asphalt, which is also significantly harder than normal trails. My feet and legs take a serious beating when I run sidewalks.

I have run trails, on a very occasional basis. I seem to twist my ankles pretty easily and consequently have found the constancy of my running program is better served, when I stick to improved trails and grassed or asphalt surfaces. I also do a bit of hiking (we section hike the Appalachian Trail on a recurring basis) and I find it useful to wear boots that provide substantial ankle/foot support and protection on those occasions.

In any event, good luck with your running program!

I typically run in the morning around 5:30 (at least when I can drag my sorry butt out of bed). When it is cooler I wear a Brooks Nightlife jacket. http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpageMRA-BNLJ2.html When it is warmer I do not use anything like that jacket, although my running shorts and shoes have reflective strips on them.

I run at night in Dark clothes without any problems.

Not many people live in my neighborhood or drive down my street so no worries there.

I use an Ipod sometimes but only when I need that extra bit of motivation to run farther.

Running in the moonlight is by far my favorite.

I do it occasionally and I have a flashing LED pinned on my back.

Well, I broke down and bought a tiny headlamp the other day. It keeps getting darker and darker in the mornings, and it is to the point where I'm running in pitch black a lot because of cloud cover. I still don't mind running in the dark, but I worry about cars.

I took a look at my cold weather clothes, and most of it is black or other dark colors, and I decided I needed to be visible. I think the headlamp should help.

If I run with music, I always start out with the Deftones track " 7 Words ". I run with a reflective armband that has a built in slowrate blinker. The blinking light comes in handy when I get into areas with no sidewalks and no street lights.

I run in a public park that gets no artificial light. It has worried me a few times because I have seen a few police cars next to civilian cars sitting in the parking lot as I run by (about 30-50 feet away). Much of our police force got put in jail for drug smuggling (meth and marijuana) about 6 years ago and I hope I am not intruding on more of this.

Other than that, I don't have any worries about running at night. I have tripped a few times, but I would probably trip during the day, too.
