Does anyone else absolutely love this painting? Every couple of months I just stare at it for a while. It is remarkable. Wasn't Gericault only in his 20's when he did this? Amazing that a magnum opus can be produced so early in life.

I'd always liked it, but seeing it in person blew me away. It's huge, and the effect is awesome.

Did a lot of research concerning this painting, there was a long article (I hope I still have it) about it and other Gericault studies emphasizing the cannibalism a bit more. Also enjoy his studies of mental patients.

Masterpieces are best done in the beginning or at the end.

Yep, me too. I was content to let the hordes of obnoxious foreign tourists fight each other to look at the corny Mona Lisa, while I got to stand in front of this one and stare at it as long as I wanted...

It's really something that should be seen in person at least once, just to get the full scale of the thing... it really is GIGANTIC. (like 12 feet by 16 feet or something).

Many old paintings were originally very large (including many famous ones in the Louvre), but it was common to cut them up to move and sell them as time passed. If the Raft of the Medusa was painted a century or two before, we'd probably only have a portion of it today.

Whereas La Giaconda/Mona Lisa was actually painted that tiny little size, and, yes, is very underwhelming. Beautiful composition, exquisite detail. Of course, Conne probably just likes it for the dead naked dudes.
