Do you have to be rich to dress in style?

Shopping around for good quality/style clothing its all really expensive to me. Especially being a 19yearold college student in debt...

How did you guys shop at this age of being BROKE.

Thankfully, grunge was popular when I was in college.

I'm going through similar things right now. Set limits on what you're able to buy. I spent $200 on shoes/ties in the last couple of weeks (back to school shopping), and I'm not letting myself buy anything else for the next couple of months.

Do you have a job? The fact that you have a loan suggests that you have a work-study job. If not, get on it. Depending on where you live, could add $200 to $500 to your income per month.

Be patient for better deals. I'm a senior and decided to improve my dressing in preparation for the real world, and the BS forums here are a great resource for interview clothes, classy casual clothes, etc. Frequent websites like fatwallet.com or slickdeals.net to stretch your dollar, both for clothes (just bought a pair of RL sneakers for $25), and for other necessities.

These days it's easier than in the past, thanks to ebay, yoox, and the BS area of SF. These are the best places for those on a budget if you don't live in a major city and don't have access to seasonal sales.

That being said, really, being well dressed in undergrad/college is a waste of time/money. Nobody cares and you aren't going to impress anybody except people you really don't want to be around.

It's certainly good to have ONE or TWO nice items (one good suit, a good pair of shoes, shirt, etc.), but having fifteen pairs of jeans and twenty pairs of shoes and a bunch of shirts is just dumb. I spent WAY too much money during my college days on clothes when I really couldn't afford it and, looking back, I think it was kind of stupid. I felt like it was really cool at the time, but I wish I had given some cash back to my parents or just saved it for a rainy day....

Sites like SF are bad temptations because of the vast amount of cool stuff on display, but I'd say use the site as a learning tool for the FUTURE (when you're making lots of $$$) and hold off spending much until you finish school and get yourself out of debt.

Just my two cents, of course...

Absolutely not. You might need to be rich to dress fashionably, but style is not fashion.

You can be more stylish in a well picked thrift store outfit than $1,000 worth of ill-fitting designer label garbage.

eBay, thrift stores, outlets, sales. Come to think of it, that's how I still shop.

You don't have to be rich to be my girl
You don't have to be cool to rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time, and your kiss.

That song is the shizzle rach. Prince is above labels, which means the listener is exempt from being labeled just by listening to him. Right?

Exactly. He's also very good at basketball, apparently...

You both need to go bathe yourselves in the waters of lake Minnetonka.
