Putting together a black-tie outfit based around a midnight velvet jacket. Thoughts on black calf whole-cuts over patent leather? How about a hidden-placket on the shirt?

My go-to tuxedo shirt has a hidden placket, and frankly I think black calf wholecuts (with silk ribbon laces) look better than patent -- but if you're already going velvet it may be worth your while not to stray too far in other respects. I think you could pull off all three as long as everything else was as bland and conventional as possible. To that end I'd probably go cummerbund instead of a waistcoat.

I think this is pretty good advice. A covered plcket is pretty standard stuff these days, and whole cuts are a great choice with black tie; I wear formal loafers with my rig. Black bow tie is de rigeur with midnight blue dinner suit, but be sure your trousers and cummerbund are also midnight. If you absolutely hate cummerbunds (some people really do) and can't get over it, do wear a waistcoat. I don't think this is the occasion to experiment with an uncovered waist. I'm never in favour of an uncovered waist, but especially not when you already have a few details that will draw attention. I also wouldn't do a pocket square or bout (unless you are in a wedding party, that is).

I'm torn between a textured bow tie to complement the DJ or a satin bow tie to sedate things a bit.

By the way, your pic at the bottom of that picture really sums it all up. That is a rapid transformation from disheveled tryer into comfortably casual serious dude. I like.

Just to make sure, that's not actually a picture of me. I took that from the WAYWRN and from the comments that accompanied that picture I believe it is of Spoo Poker. I do think though that that's a great (classic?) look for how to wear a grey SC. Black trousers and black shoes are on my shopping list.

Looking for a inexpensive navy/white pindot tie

Should I get one from charless tyrwhitt (free with purchase of a shirt - about $50 total)
or should I get this pre-owned lands end one for around $6 or ...?

I did that Charles Tyrwhitt deal....got 2 shirts and a free tie for about 80 bucks. That's a great deal in my book.

I'm 22 and I love my beeswax Bushacres. They're the same as the DBs but with a cost-cutting rubber sole instead of crepe. They're cheap shoes to be sure but the leather uppers on them only seem to get better with age.

White nubucks with red soles is a little... obnoxious.
Thanks. I'll probably for the beeswax clark's contrary to Veremund's thinking. I've been swayed since you are now the second to respond in favour of the beeswax and your final point makes sense. I never saw white bucks as obnoxious since I could see them being paired with seersucker or denim/chinos but obviously I have no education of style etiquette as much as most around here.

I didn't ask you a question. You cheeky monkey.

Not to be obnoxious since this is how you've decided to perceive me, but you actually did ask a question...the fact that you neglected to put a question mark for punctuation does not negate that:
The real question is which is more your style.
Page 1593.

Seems they'd be a perfect match for him then.
I'll still thank you for your time since your previous question suggesting for me to elaborate on my style drew in others who actually wanted to help that gave good answers. Cheers :D I would love to have your opinion regardless though since I feel you actually did have one or else you wouldn't have asked me about my style. Have a great weekend.

Hey everyone,
Glad to be writing my first post. I come here looking for more experienced opinions and advice and buying my first bespoke suit. I am new to this and want to make a good decision on this significant investment, so I will respect/appreciate everyone's input.
I am looking to buy a suit for my upcoming wedding. The wedding will be in Woods Hole MA on cape cod, we will have a property with a beach and nice lawn (no we are not rich just found a great deal!). I am on a budget $700-$1000 and want to make sure I don't waste my money on a smoke and mirror deal which is intended to take advantage of people like myself- I want the best I can afford and don't have an unlimited budget.
I want to find a suit that is classic and timeless while looking sharp and not "dated". That said, I am looking to go with a blue suit with a nice tailored fit. My style is eclectic, I like looking good but work in TV promotion in midtown manhattan so my day to day dress is more casual, however I always try to look good and show my own sense of style. I grew up in Massachusetts/Cape Cod so I tend to favor a classic preppy look when I dress nice, but refuse to go with the cliche Cape Cod wedding style (Khakis, blue blazer and boat shoes/flip flops).
Currently I have my mind set on a specific bespoke in Brooklyn. I want the specific tailor to remain unnamed to avoid bias, I can reveal when I have the suit in hand- maybe this will keep some of you frequenting this post so I can receive consistent feedback while also keeping posters/repliers entertained.
I found a place that will give me a huge deal on a bespoke suit and custom shirt for $700- fully canvased and made from these fabrics: Dormeuil, Valentino, Holland and Sherry, and Ermernegildo Zenga.

First step:
I am looking for some feedback on fabrics, specifically for a classic blue suit. Are there certain fabrics to watch for some to avoid? This is all new to me and fingering through 1000 fabric patterns is a lot and am looking for help narrowing down my options. Any input is appreciated, if you think I should pick another color I would love to hear it, any materials or brand to avoid I would love to hear it.

Thanks I look forward to hearing responses and questions, I am very excited and nervous to start this process.

So the bunching that happens on the back of my thighs is due to the fabric riding up?

Maybe. We need visuals, and a tailor would be most qualified to determine the problem.

Please forgive my earlier rudeness, I've had my knickers in a twist all day. I'd definitely go with the desert boots. They are invariably stylish, and I also think white bucks are just OTT.

Though I'm afraid I must maintain that I wasn't asking that question. Stating which question would be more relevant is not the same as asking it. ;)

I'm going to attend a student union network event, and I have a chance to meet my potential employer. And the dress code is business attire (suit + tie).
I didn't bring my suit to the uni, but I did, however, bring a peak label navy wool blazer and suede semi-brogue oxfords. I was thinking about using the blazer, shoes (need to buy a tie) and khaki chinos to the event. Would that be unappropiate or would that be ok? I could switch out the khaki chinos with some very dark navy chinos, but i don't think it will look good, but it will certainly look more like a suit than navy jacket + khaki chinos.

I think I will look better than anyone at the event, because people here dress like ****, but I don't want to stand out too much... without a suit.

Edit: I'm in a little bit hurry, because I don't have a tie yet. So I am going to buy one tomorrow. Should I buy a expensive high quality tie, or a cheap low quality tie from H&M or Topman or something?

Fair enough. Forgive my ignorance. I think my question has been answered unanimously in favour of desert boots which is great. Thanks a lot. Tomorrow is another day, hopefully it will be more pleasant for you. Thanks again.
