No, it's no different than a tie with a more formal jacket -- it should complement your overall choice of shirt, trousers, and jacket.

What do you consider the best size for a pocket square to be folded nicely ? 12'' x 12'', 13'' x 13'' or even 14'' x 14'' ?

My uncle wants a tie for Christmas. I"m a 20 year old college student so I don't really know anything about buying ties.

he said:

I would like a tie for christmas...I am so bored with my current collection that I don't even want to look at them in the morning..most of my jackets are brown, dark blue or grey...but any color of tie will work as I wear white and pastel colored shirts.
Budget is $75 with tax and shipping.

What should I do?

I have a budget of ~200 for a pair of shoes/boots that will go well with grey striped trousers (straight style) and a sport coat/blazer?

If what I'm asking for is too vague, what type of brands should I at least look into.

Thanks

Taste in ties is a very personal thing. Without knowing exactly what aspect of your uncle's tie collection bores him, it would be hard to recommend something else that he would like. He is largely right in that many different colors of tie will work with his neutral jacket colors and shirt colors. As for your price range, it's a little below some forum favorite tie vendors such as Sam Hober (samhober.com). Another vendor, FIH Ties (www.fourinhand.com), has some ties in that price range.

Allen Edmonds on discount (not that hard to find) if you are looking for traditional quality dress shoes.

You'll probably have better luck asking that question in the Streetwear & Denim forum.

Who makes the velvet slippers for George Cleverley? Is it Bowhill & Elliott?

Look on their website at the following models for some ideas: Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Strand, Van Ness, McAllister, MacNeil, Quinton, Tresana. Any of those are appropriate for wear with a sport coat and trousers.

In general, the "fancier" the decoration on the shoe, the less formal the shoe (e.g., the MacNeil is "fancier" than the Park Avenue). Black is a more formal color than brown, but dark brown is probably more versatile. Lighter browns are more casual. Dark brown probably has the widest range in that it can be worn well with most suits and most sport coats whereas black can be too formal or stark for many sport coats.

My trousers will be dark grey and my sport coat/blazer will prob be a shade of grey too. My shoe has to be black right? And thanks for the suggestions. *EDIT, I'm really liking the fifth avenue

Formality of brown shoes at the office.

I work in a formal and conservative office I really want to get these Chestnut brown C&J's. But not sure what suit I could wear them with. When do you guys wear brown oxfords with suits?

Here are the shoes.
