The body of the sweater is what matters there, not the neck. Banana republic pretends to be hip and stylish, but most of their stuff has the same crappy, overly generous cut designed to ensure their clothes fit fat people pretending they can still fit into a medium that a lot of mall brands suffer from.

Oh we have plenty of casual weddings like you describe too (though you won't see many bow ties and seersucker isn't a thing over here). I was just pointing out that it's not suitable for the more formal types, in case he was unaware. I still think linen would be a little more versatile, and also cooler.

Fair enough, though the cooler depends on the exact choice of fabric. Since he's getting one MTM, he would be able to ask and pick out a cotton that's not too tightly woven. Of course, if he wanted to go with something like a lighter weight cotton twill, it wouldn't wear quite as cool, but it would also range nicely into spring and fall, but still wear cooler than a lot of the fairly tightly woven wool suiting on the market these days.

No one will notice its the same suit if you wear a different shirt and tie (with assumption it's a traditionally conservative suit).

6 - if you enjoy that much and price is right, purchase multiples in various colors and potentially double in staple colors.

Some may disagree with step #6.

You could be buying them a size too large.

For context, I am 6'4" 190 lb and almost always wear a medium sweater.

Other options, beside the ralph lauren, would be uniqlo, jcrew (which has a slim fit in addition to their regular fit) or even brooks brothers when on sale. One of the downsides of cheaper wool sweaters will be pretty bad pilling that will happy pretty quickly. You can get "merino" wool sweaters at target for about $20, but you get approximately 3 wears before they look like sh*t.

I would say wait for a BB sale and try and grab one of those. If you have a store you can try them on in, so much the better.

Also, in general JCrew > BR.

What is a stylistic way to keep your ears warm while still matching a smart cashmere or wool topcoat?

Thanks for the advice cptjeff & E,TF. Both make some good points. I've considered a linen or linen woll blend as well. I'll look into both when I finally decide to pull the trigger on a summer suit. I can see how cotton would be more casual though. I think it would be ok for most of the outdoor weddings I have been to.

You're confusing collars (button down, spread, cutaway) with cloth (Oxford cloth, end-on-end, twill).
